The sign.

“The Burger King sign at 16th Street and Mission is hanging a bit perilously over the awning where lots of people wait for busses in the morning. It broke free of its anchors in the plaster wall and looks like it’s ready to break completely away. I’ve attached a photo.

I’ve notified the BK manager, the City (Building Inspection) and the Chronicle “fix-it” column, but nothing’s happened.

I’m worried that this sign will fall and kill someone.

Can you help warn people before something happens?” James

We called Burger King, but got a disconnected number. We also called the Mission District police station, and they’re sending someone to check it out.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.
