Mission Local is seeking a candidate for a hybrid human resources and office management role. We are currently a team of 17, and will likely grow to 20 over the next year. This role would report to the executive editor, and be responsible for HR and office tasks across the newsroom.

Core responsibilities

HR

  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding benefits, payroll, leaves of absence, policies, and personnel matters.
  • Process routine HR transactions (new hires, terminations, role changes, payroll updates, benefits enrollment).
  • Maintain employee records and ensure HRIS accuracy and compliance.
  • Draft and distribute HR communications (policy updates, benefits information, compliance notices).
  • Assist with recruitment coordination, posting openings, screening applications, scheduling interviews.
  • Ensure compliance with California labor laws and company policies in all employee matters.
  • Coordinate benefits administration, open enrollment and employee onboarding.
  • Handle routine employee-relations matters and escalate complex issues to leadership or outside consultant as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion with sensitive personnel information.
  • Assist with the required documentation during union negotiations.

Office manager duties

  • Oversee daily office operations, ensuring a clean, organized and seamless workplace environment.
  • Manage relationships with vendors, building management and maintenance providers.
  • Keep records and work on Mission Local’s filing system for board documents, including insurance documents, minutes, etc. 
  • Ensure all employees have a bathroom and building keys.
  • Handle incoming/outgoing mail, packages and general office correspondence.
  • Monitor and restock office and kitchen supplies, and maintain tidy and well-organized shared spaces.
  • Support coordination of office events, team lunches, happy hours and occasional off-site gatherings.
  • Provide general support for culture-building and workplace experience initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Experience in office management and HR.
  • A willingness to take additional HR training.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Someone who enjoys working with different people and has an interest in team building.

Salary & benefits

  • This is a non-exempt position paying $80,000 a year or $38.46 an hour.
  • Three weeks of vacation, plus a week off between Christmas and New Year’s Day
  • Health, dental and vision insurance.
  • Federal holidays.
