Mission Local closed the book on 2025 with a successful run through awards season, taking home a cache of prizes in both the Society of Professional Journalists Excellence in Journalism contest and the San Francisco Press Club Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards.
Mission Local’s winners in the SPJ contest:
- In the category of explanatory journalism, Abigail Vân Neely and Ronna Raz for a text-and-illustration profiling of San Francisco’s alternative courts.
- In the category of public service journalism, Lydia Chávez, Abigail Vân Neely and Oscar Palma for documenting conditions on the streets in one part of the Mission District to hold City Hall accountable.

- In the category of overall excellence, best community news website, Mission Local.
- In the category of breaking news, first place, Joe Eskenazi, “Mission Local obtains list of SFUSD schools to potentially merge/close.”
- In the category of business/technology story, first place, Julia Gitis, “From 1,000 to zero: The loss of public news racks in San Francisco.”
- In the category of columns — news/political, first place, Joe Eskenazi.
- In the category of criminal justice, first place, Abigail Vân Neely, “New shoes, baby steps, and ‘too much to lose’ at Tenderloin community court.”
- In the category of environment/nature, second place, Ronna Raz, “Comic: Meet San Francisco’s urban wildlife, from lichen to coyotes.”
- In the category of investigative reporting, second place, Abigail Vân Neely, “Supe candidate Michael Lai touts his education startup. Teachers recall low wages, disorder and collapse.”
- In the category of photography/photo series, second place, Angel Mayorga, Michael Santiago, David Chalk, “SNAPS.”
