Halloween this year is gearing up to be one of the best yet in San Francisco, and it’s not just for the trick-or-treaters.
The final Castro Night Market this year will be the very first “Halloween Edition” — a throwback to the infamous Castro Halloween that at one point saw hundreds of thousands of revelers take to San Francisco streets (until a mass shooting in 2006 shut the whole thing down).
And, yes, alcoholic beverages will be served at the Castro Night Market, open from 5 to 11 p.m., but organizers say it won’t be a repeat of those heady times. A costume contest will be added to the regular programming of local vendors, merchants and live music.
This means that on Friday, 18th Street between Diamond and Noe streets will become one of more than three dozen streets across San Francisco closed to traffic on Oct. 31 — prime real estate for safe trick-or-treating.
Mission Local has made a list of every car-free street in San Francisco for Halloween. The Outer Sunset tops the list with seven car-free streets, followed by Bernal Heights and the Lower Haight and Duboce Triangle area, with four each.
In the Mission, trick-or-treating can start immediately after lunch, because Shotwell Street between 21st and 22nd streets is closed to traffic from 1:30 to 10 p.m.
But in every part of the city, there are safe streets for trick-or-treating and other revelry.
