Avenue Greenlight, a nonprofit in San Francisco dedicated to revitalizing the city, announced a new competition for grants to make city neighborhoods “better and brighter,” including projects involving murals, community events and beautification.

The grant application opens July 24 for community organizations, nonprofits and merchant associations to apply for grants up to $20,000 per project. Applicants must fall under the 501(c)3 or 501(c)6 purview or identify a fiscal sponsor. Groups can apply at avenuegreenlightsf.org until Sept. 4 at 5 p.m..

Recent initiatives from the organization include supporting the Fillmore Jazz Festival when it was at risk of cancellation, and implementing pressure washing on corridor sidewalks.

Further information and guidelines are available on the website.

“We are always better off as a community when those on the ground who understand the unique contours of each neighborhood can directly access new resources for local placemaking and activations,” Chris Larsen, a primary donor for Avenue Greenlight, said in the press release.

The president of Avenue Greenlight, Maryo Mogannam, said these grants represent the continuation of the organization’s efforts to “bring San Francisco’s neighborhoods to life.”

The 2024 grant recipients included the San Francisco Council of District Merchants Associations, Art Walk SF, San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy. Each received $15,000.

  1. I’m sure that local grassroots can just give their money to a 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor like the Parks Alliance and qualify for this program.
