3/29/25 SW 16th Street Plaza Photo by Gustavo Hernandez

At 10 a.m. Saturday, one police officer was on foot and another sat in his car on the southwest plaza at Mission and 16th streets. The San Francisco Police Department’s mobile command unit remains parked on the plaza.

Just steps away, people gathered in the alleyways — some apparently unhoused, some sitting in silence, others quietly interacting. Caledonia Street toward 15th Street was lined with temporary barricades and scattered trash.  Capp Street had a small group hanging out.

A man hosed down the sidewalk on Julian Avenue, washing away the remains of makeshift cardboard shelters.

A bright spot – a mural-covered car driving through the intersection.

By the late afternoon, a reader sent in two more photographs showing a group being moved from Wiese Street and a later congregation on Julian Avenue.

Later in the afternoon

  1. Campers,

Willie used to load up those big spray trucks with chemicals and have his drivers cruise down Market Street at 3am Power Washing entire blocks and any Homeless who happened to be there.

    Cold hearted, yes.

Cleaner streets, yes on that too.

I’d like to request that Mayor Lurie do this to Wiese nightly for 2 weeks (14 repetitions in the same situation forms a habit) and then commission fresh murals

    1. Maybe instead of inflicting cruelty the city could help get El Coyote (or something) reopened at 16th & Wiese? That corner was never so bad when the restaurant was there. And maybe they could support the food bank on Wiese so that it could distribute food more days of the week – because the dealers and users avoid the alley when people are around using it legitimately. How about some positive steps to improve the area instead of just kicking down? I’m sure you can find another way to get your dopamine hits.

  2. File under “just right wing rich people:” A neighbor at 490 South Van Ness affordable housing noticed a fentanyl party going on outside of her family’s doorway this afternoon and got quite exercised as she summarily dispatched them. Don’t take no shit.
