We’ve never done this before, but we’ve just put together our first-ever impact report; a look back at all our accomplishments over 2024, a letter from our editors explaining what we’re prioritizing next, and a chance for readers to go behind the scenes for a glimpse at our financials.
This past year was transformational, and we’re now bigger than ever: We have more staff, readers and donors than at any time in our history.
You can read the report in its entirety below, but here are some highlights:
- We won two “general excellence” state and national awards, alongside a slew of other first-place prizes locally.
- Our “Meet the Candidates” series saw our reporters hosting 112 public coffee meet-ups where they sourced questions for supervisor candidates directly from the neighborhoods they were covering.
- We hosted seven interns throughout the year, our biggest class ever.
- We got 919 new donors, meaning there are now more than 2,100 of you supporting us financially.
If you’re newer to our work, the impact statement outlines our mission and reporting approach, and details three major series that shaped our coverage last year: Our “Meet the Candidates” weekly questionnaire of those running for supervisor, our “See How They Run” series following along mayoral contenders, and “BigMoneySF,” our in-depth look at money in San Francisco politics.
Seeing it all spelled out gave us a huge sense of accomplishment. We hope when you read it, you’ll feel the same way. After all, this coverage is only possible because of you.

I criticize (in the comments and on social) but I do it because I genuinely think y’all are the best of the next generation of media that the city, country, and world need, and I want you to be even better. (Upped my donation yesterday, too.)
Congrats on a great year, and may you continue to be successful in a new year where you’ll be needed even more.
