2024 San Francisco School Board Race

Mail-in ballots must be postmarked on or before Nov. 5, 2024 and received by the elections office no later than seven days after Nov. 5, 2024.
Non-citizen parents of children living in the city are permitted to vote in school board elections and can find information on doing so here.
The candidates
Eleven candidates are vying for four seats on the city’s seven-person school board, which governs the San Francisco Unified School District’s (SFUSD) policies, budget, personnel and more.
Matt Alexander
- Job: Community organizer at Faith in Action Bay Area, incumbent board member
- Age: 54

Min Chang
- Job: CEO at healthcare organization Homebridge

- Educational background: Ph.D. in international affairs and master’s degree in international public policy from Johns Hopkins University; master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan; bachelor’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania
- SFUSD experience: Doing outreach in SFUSD and attending school board meetings.

Virginia Cheung
- Job: SFUSD parent, co-founder and vice president of Give a Beat Foundation (volunteer work) and previously director of advancement at Wu Yee Children’s Services

Lefteris Eleftheriou

Parag Gupta

- SFUSD experience: Parent of recent CIS De Avila grad; School Site Council chair; 8th grade algebra focus group; drafting SFUSD policy priorities for SF Democrats as SF DCCC member; developing financial strategy for Stupski Foundation programs to help students, including SFUSD students, complete postsecondary education

Ann Hsu

- SFUSD experience: Parent of two SFUSD students; Jefferson Elementary parent-teacher association leadership; parent advocate on issues such as outdoor learning and school safety

Endorsements
With few voters directly involved with San Francisco public schools — less than one-fifth of the city’s voters have children, and even fewer send those children to public schools — a candidate’s endorsements play an outsized role in getting elected in a down-ballot race like school board, said retired political consultant David Latterman.
This election cycle, the groups offering endorsements to the 11 candidates vying for four open seats have been actively engaged, each providing varying amounts of financial and human capital.
The following candidates have not received endorsements from the groups listed above: Virginia Cheung, Lefteris Eleftheriou, Ann Hsu, and Madeline Krantz.
