Earlier this month, Mission Local reported that several organizations in the Mission District want to expand the Latino Cultural District beyond 24th Street, encompassing the business-heavy corridor of 16th and Mission streets.  We asked some business operators in the area who would be affected what they thought of the plan.

  1. As the video clearly shows – the community is unanimous in supporting a greatly enlarged fiefdom.
All hail Erick Arguello and his ever expanding empire.

  2. Expand the ‘Latino Cultural District’?? Sadly, the Mission/Latino District is fading away; nothing stays the same in this life. It used to be a district of Irish and other European people, and that faded away too. My family has been in the Mission since the late 1880’s from Ireland, and weren’t ‘offended’ when various Hispanic folks slowly but surely kind of took over the Mission…I’m still there and would never leave it, no matter what the cultural tone is. Latinos do not own the Mission, but their influence has been very strong, obviously, and loved and enjoyed for years, and hopefully we’ll still have some of that for some years to come. We’ve all noticed that the most well known and popular stalwart businesses in the Mission have left or soon to leave, and within less than five years not a one will be left. And they most likely will not be replaced by Latino businesses. Great thrift stores all closed, Siegal’s, various great restaurants, and God forbid, now Lucca’s is soon to close…so many beloved places are gone now but that’s life. It has been so much fun, so colorful, and I am so thankful to God that I had rhe luck and priveledge to live in The Mission!
