Multiple people were robbed, assaulted, and one man was killed over the long weekend in the Mission District, and several people were transported to the hospital.
On Friday, July 1, at 11:44 p.m., a man was shot and killed at 24th and Shotwell streets. The police have not released many details, but Mission Local spoke to a friend of the victim and a memorial of candles and flowers had been set up on the spot. Read more here.
Fire and Robbery Assault
Earlier Friday at 4 a.m., a store awning on 15th Street between San Bruno Avenue and Utah Street was set on fire by an unknown suspect. There were no injuries, and the damage to the store is unknown at this time.
At 5:13 p.m. on Friday, a 61-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after a fight with a 44-year-old man. The woman picked up a purse from the ground near Mission and 13th streets when the man told her that the purse was his and punched the woman in the face. The woman dropped her phone, which the suspect then grabbed. The police later arrested the man.
Glass Bottle Thrown
On Saturday, July 2, at 10:30 p.m., a 67-year-old man was in his room in a building on South Van Ness Avenue between 15th and 16th streets when a 44-year-old woman was being loud in the hallway of the building. The man went outside to quiet her down, when the woman threw a bottle at the man’s head. The man was taken to the hospital but is in stable condition, and the police arrested the woman.
Group Attack
On Sunday, July 3, a man woke up in the hospital after being attacked by a group of men on the street. A 19-year-old man was walking home on Harrison Street between 22nd and 23rd streets at 9:30 p.m. when he was hit in the head from behind by some unknown object, causing him to fall down.
As the victim turned around, he saw a group of five men around him, who hit him multiple times as he fell to the ground, knocking him out. The 19-year-old lost consciousness and woke up in the hospital with his phone, charger, and wallet with cash and cards stolen. The victim is in stable condition, and the police have not made an arrest.
Homophobic Slur and Pepper-Spray Attack
On Monday, July 4, a 42-year-old homeless man was in his tent near Division Street and Potrero Avenue at 1:04 a.m. when a man in his late 20s was being loud outside the victim’s tent. The second man used an unknown homophobic slur against the victim, and threw an unknown object at the victim which hit him in the hand, requiring stitches. The victim was treated at the hospital and is in stable condition, and the police have not made an arrest.
And later that day at 2:26 a.m., a 41-year-old man was walking near 18th Street and South Van Ness Avenue when a woman of unknown age reached into his jacket pocket and grabbed the man’s wallet. The victim turned around and another woman pepper-sprayed him in the eyes. Both women then fled on foot, and the man was taken to the hospital for treatment. The police have not made an arrest.
