Janis Lewin worked for Mission Local for three months and produced some terrific photo essays.  Lewin has long been going to Cuba and and she has organized a Cuba trip (January 6 to the 17th) for aspiring photographers.

Here are the details:

Our special Photo Trip to Cuba, especially eastern Cuba, will be an unforgettable experience for all participants. ANY LEVEL OF PHOTOGRAPHER or VISUAL ARTIST is welcome. I offer you the benefits of my years traveling around and photographing the island.  The details of the itinerary will be forthcoming… and the purpose of the trip is to offer possibilities for the visual observer and to help the artist of photographer to realize their own way of seeing.  There will be time to look at each person’s work.  We will have access to interiors, extraordinary architecture and of course, people.  Traveling in Cuba can be quite surprising- we will meet Cubans from various levels of society, some experts on history or culture, as well as artists, musicians and dancers.  We will have a translator, and several participants do speak Spanish.

The price for double occupancy is $5700. The trip is 12 days and 11 nights and includes an internal flight from Santiago de Cuba to Havana.  Single supplement is available.

Notes on the itinerary:

Days 1-4: Santiago de Cuba.  Cuba’s second city, and the source for much of Cuban music that has influenced the world so profoundly. Culture, history, dance, and the neighborhoods: we will explore the special aspects of Santiago de Cuba.

Days 5-7: Baracoa. Long isolated, this early Cuban town offers a special kind of charm and an extraordinary variety in architectural styles for a small town.  With old friends we will eat, live and share stories, giving participants the possibility of a deeper understanding. Visiting the sites of Taino life, we will meet descendants of that indigenous group.

Days 8-TRAVEL DAY- Baracoa-Santiago for the early morning flight to Havana on:

Day 9-11: Havana: Photographing around El Prado, exploring Havana neighborhoods that are not tourist-oriented, meeting artists, galleries and the special markets of Havana will be some of the opportunities for participants.

Day 12: TRAVEL DAY: Havana>Miami (or NYC, which may change the price a bit.)
