A Mission-centric noir film that follows the tale of a building inspector hell-bent on finding the truth behind a deadly fire, The Other Barrio, will have a special screening at the Roxie Theater on Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m.

The film screening will be attended by four San Francisco firemen who are working on a documentary about the Gartland Apartments fire in 1975, which killed 12 people. The Other Barrio is loosely based on that fire, which took place just a block away from the Roxie Theater.

Lou Dematteis, one of the creators of The Other Barrio, shares this quote from firefighter Mike Rustia:

This coming fall, a new documentary film will reveal the true story behind “The Other Barrio.” “Fire in the Mission: The Gartland Apartments” describes the events that led to a devastating fire in December 1975 at the intersection of Valencia and 16th St, a fire that changed a neighborhood.Told from the perspective of the firefighters, residents and community activists affected by the fire, the film will explore the role of the fire in the ongoing conflicts over displacement and gentrification in San Francisco’s Mission District.

A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening. Tickets available here.
