Rooted in the community for more than four decades, El Tecolote is celebrating its 45th anniversary tonight at the Grand Theater at 2665 Mission St.  The bilingual community newspaper was founded in 1970 by Juan Gonzalez, renowned reporter and journalism department chair at San Francisco City College. Gonzalez started the paper in an effort to provide relevant coverage on the issues that affect and interest the neighborhood and its residents.

The free event will feature music, food, and drinks, and will give attendees an opportunity to dig through the newspaper’s archives and listen to tales of grassroots journalism and activism in the Mission District’s Latino community. The “birthday bash” will begin at 7:00 p.m. tonight.
