Richard Montoya as Roberto Morales in a scene from "The Other Barrio".

When a housing inspector is told to write off the deaths of several hotel residents in a massive fire as accidents, he doubles down and throws himself into the investigation. On his journey, he encounters corruption, greed, coverups, and temptation – but also new allies and maybe even love. That’s a taste of what transpires in The Other Barrio, a noir film with a Mission-centric twist that debuted in February and returns tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday to the Brava Theater. The film was adapted by director Dante Betteo from a short story by San Francisco Poet Laureate Alejandro Murguia.

Co-producer Lou Dematteis and production designer René Yañez, both veteran artists in the Mission and beyond, sat down with Mission Local at the BFF.FM studio today to talk about the film, gentrification, local culture, and how these themes transcend the Mission.

  1. Highly recommended. See it if you can. Even if the topic wasn’t so critical, it also succeeds as a great movie and an excellent example of film noir.
