Today’s Block:23rd to 24th Harrison to Alabama
Shooting your own neighborhood is hard. I found myself instantly regretting that I hadn’t picked a different block, lesser known to me. But I pushed through, opened my eyes, and searched for unique perspectives of the things I see every day. In the end I felt I knew my block just a little bit better.
I shoot a lot of commercial real-estate photography, so it was a great opportunity to break free of the conventions of that type of shooting.
This block is oh so very mission. You can even see the wave of development contrasting against the backdrop of this historic block that survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. Look South on Harrison from 24th and you’ll see condos on the right and Edwardians on the left. The now fallow Western Plywood warehouse across the street has plans on the books to become a 40-foot-high, four-story apartment buildings. However the other side of the street is peppered with Edwardians and Victorians and even an art deco or two, many murals, neighborhood parklets and yards overflowing with plants. It’s really a charming neighborhood to be a part of. I feel very lucky to be a part of it. The main reason I am able to stay in SF was that I was a resident advocate for my house to become a community run co-op that formed a non-profit which purchased the building when our landlord put it on the market, avoiding eviction and establishing affordable housing for perpetuity with the help of the San Francisco Community Land Trust.
