The Community Music Center will be hosting an event this Sunday for families to figure out what best fits their musical needs. The event (from 3-5p.m) will allow families to sample a class or join a jam session. Here’s the program:
Music for Children – 3:00pm-4:00pm, led by Irene Chagall (Music for Children faculty). This workshop for children ages 4 – 7 demonstrates a Music for Children class where children develop musicianship through rhythm games, songs, creative movement and use of Orff instruments.
Instrument Petting Zoo (focus on Strings!) – 4:00pm-5:00pm, led by CMC faculty, staff, Young Musician Program students and CMC’s Executive Director, Chris Borg. Have a listen or try out any of the following string instruments with CMC faculty and students: violin, viola, cello and piano.
Jazz Jam Session – 3:00pm-4:00pm, led by Max Miller-Loran (Beginning Jazz Improv Workshop and trumpet faculty) and Hamir Atwal, (Jazz in the Neighborhood). Play jazz standards with other jazz lovers. Bring your instrument and get ready to play! There will be a stand-up bass available.

Latin Jam Session – 4:00pm-5:00pm, led by Miguel Govea (trumpet faculty) with Javier Cabanillas (Mission District Young Musician Program Faculty). Join other musicians to play Latin music – from salsa to cha-cha-cha to son to Latin jazz. Bring your instrument and get ready to play! There will be a stand-up bass available.
Chamber Music Open Readings
3:00-5:00pm, led by Loretta Taylor (Chamber Music Program Coordinator at CMC’s Richmond Branch, violin faculty). Bring your instrument and an open mind and we will read string chamber music from various musical styles. Music will be provided. Some sight reading ability is helpful.
Group Sing!
3:00-4:00pm, led by Ellen Robinson (Anything Goes Chorus Faculty). Open to all voices with a focus on pop and folk music The group will sing songs in unison and do partner songs and rounds that create instant harmony. This session gives people an idea of what happens in Anything Goes Chorus I.
4:00-5:00pm, led by Ellen Robinson (Anything Goes Chorus Faculty). This session will have a focus on jazz and Broadway songs in three and four part harmonies. Sight singing ability is helpful. This session gives people an idea of what happens in Anything Goes Chorus II.
Vocal Repertoire Workshop
3:00pm-5:00pm, led by Meghan Dibble (voice faculty) with accompaniment by John Kryk (CMC faculty accompanist). Bring a piece you are working on to sing, and sheet music if you would like piano accompaniment. You will receive feedback from a CMC faculty member. Open to students of all levels and ages.
