Making a huipil, a traditional indigenous garment, is a skill learned generation by generation. The textile artists have ancient knowledge and skills that they weave into the creation of these coveted and unique garments.

For one day, you will have the opportunity to attend Threads of Love/Hilos de Amor at Galería de la Raza and bid on more than 150 huipiles that will be auctioned. The proceeds from these collectors’ items will benefit Instituto Familiar de la Raza and the Chicana Latina Foundation. Instituto provides ceremonies, support and mental health services, advocacy and community activities. CLF empowers Latina women to go to college, provides scholarships and offers a leadership institute to teach young women leadership skills.

The huipiles hail from Mexico and Guatemala, specifically from the Trejo Family of San Pablito and from the Calixto Family in the State of Mexico. The huipiles designs will depict the Otomi/Nenu and Mazahua styles.
