Every year, hundreds of children receive a free backpack with school supplies to begin the school year.

The average cost of a backpack and school supplies is of $75. KTVU has a report on families registering in San Jose to receive the supplies.

This year, MEDA will be hosting the giveaway at John O’Connell High School and expects to have 2,000 children ready to go to school with the much needed school supplies. The giveaway presented by Google, LinkedIn and the Mayor’s Office will also host technology workshops and access to community resources.

The event is part of the Mission Neighborhood Promise, a $30 million education grant given to several organizations in the Mission to ensure that parents have access to services and that children succeed academically.

Cha Cha Cha will be hosting a happy hour fundraiser, so if you have a backpack to donate or want to contribute monetarily then show up at 2327 Mission Street, from 5:30-9pm on July 29th.
