It’s a sad, sad day for sand castles. An annual Ocean Beach fundraiser for public school art programs feels the sting of the government shutdown. A sand castle competition with teams from 26 elementary schools has been postponed indefinitely until Congress figures out what to do. You can read more in the Chronicle.

Spanking your kid is not child abuse, as long as your intent is “reasonable discipline” and not to inflict “unjustifiable physical pain or mental suffering.” So ruled a California appeals courts yesterday. The Chronicle reports that a woman had been taken to court for hitting her 12-year-old-daughter with a wooden spoon after she’d stopped doing her homework and had been lying to her parents.
