A group of people gathered in the Mission Saturday to protest the not-guilty verdict of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. San Francisco Police Officer Gordon Shyy said that people gathered at 24th Street BART Station Saturday and marched peacefully on Mission Street.

Defense attorneys said Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, acted in self-defense. They claimed that Martin, an unarmed teen in Florida, knocked Zimmerman down and slammed the man’s head against the sidewalk before Zimmerman fired his gun.

As of 11:40 p.m., police said that the crowd had dispersed peacefully. Shyy said that officers will maintain a presence in the Mission.
