Firefighters step down from the roof after putting out a one-alarm fire at Balmy alley on Tuesday night.

Firefighters extinguished a one-alarm fire between two vacant buildings on Balmy Street shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

It took 45 firefighters to put out the flames at 96 Balmy St. (at 25th Street) and the adjacent building, said Assistant Fire Chief Tom Siragusa.

There appeared to be no injuries, and the damage was contained to the two buildings. Police briefly closed 25th Street between Folsom and Harrison streets as firefighters investigated the cause.

We will update this story as we receive more information.

  1. I JUST moved out from 96 Balmy with my partner and our 20 month-old daughter 4 days ago. The vacant house on the corner was being renovated the last few days – the workers told me they were tearing down sheetrock and I could hear them banging on the walls between that house and our house.

I guess we moved out just in time, so lucky! I am so glad both houses were vacant.
