It’s 7 a.m., 41° and headed to 60°. Details for the next 10 days are here.

Join us tonight to celebrate news and neighborhood. The party’s at 518 Valencia St., from 7 to 10 p.m. Lots of goodies, including empanadas from Venga! and Chile Lindo, cookies from my oven and plenty to drink.

Now, in the news we have Mozzeria, the city’s first deaf-owned pizza restaurant, opening on Friday at 3228 16th St. near Guerrero, reports Urban Daddy.

There’s hope for Muni. The proof? A good Muni story about a recovered purse on Muni Diaries.

Shopping this weekend? Check out our holiday shopping guides — ideas for the ex and future lover, the nerd, the beer drinker and so on.

You will have to take a hike to redeem this, but it’s a good walk to Chenery Park in Glen Park: Here’s a link to a $20 coupon.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder/executive editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

  1. Glen Park is a 3 minute BART ride from 24th and Mission… In fact, it’s the very next stop on BART! Chenery Park, Gialina, Canyon Market, the Cheese Boutique and Cafe Bello are all within 2 blocks of the Glen Park BART station.

But, if you really want to take a hike, you can visit GLen Park Canyon and spend done time walking in one of the city’s largest natural habitat, filled with trees, Islais Creek, and even a Coyote or two.
