The U.S. Soccer Federation, the governing body of all forms of soccer in the country, has given $25,000 to the city to install new lights at Mission Playground.

If you recall, the playground on Valencia Street has been under construction since May and is set to open next summer. When complete, it will boast a new synthetic grass field. The old asphalt field was home to many competitive matches that were particularly hard on the knees, park users told the Chronicle.

The new lights will allow extended hours when the park reopens, according to a staff report from the Board of Supervisors. The old park also had lights.

The money won’t be enough to cover the lights, which will cost the city an additional $63,000, according to a report from the Board of Supervisors. The park makeover is set to cost a total of $7.5 million.
