It’s 6:48 a.m. and 52. Expected high of 60. Odds of rain today? About 50/50, though the weather is supposed to get nicer as the day goes on.
R.I.P. Steve Jobs. The man’s minimalist aesthetic sensibilities, showboating salesmanship, fascination with Zen buddhism and sense of himself as a figure larger than any of the companies under his charge set the template, for better or worse, for an entire generation of programmers. That wind rustling through the bamboo-lined courtyard of 1,000 dot-com offices? That’s Steve. The five year-old with an iPad? That’s Steve, too.
As for that iPhone vigil in Dolores Park last night, if anyone has photos, please e-mail them to us or send us a link. Claire Cain Miller of the New York Times published a short write-up in the Bits blog:
Most of the mourners, almost all men, were quiet, holding iPhones and a couple of iPads. Most seemed to be reading on their phones, but a few waved them in the air, with Apple’s homepage, a photo of Steve Jobs and the dates 1955-2011, filling the screen. Later they broke into groups, mostly talking about why they were upset, the legacy Mr. Jobs left and the way he and his products changed their lives.
Among the revelations in the article: A few of the people in Dolores Park were also part of a group that, upon hearing of Jobs’ death, immediately went to the Apple store.
Meanwhile, another Occupy SF protest yesterday, part of the protests that continue on Wall Street and are spreading to other parts of the country. Interesting to see how this will develop.
