Artist Juana Alicia is currently raising funds to create a permanent installation of 10 of her monumental ceramic murals for Satellite Senior Housing’s Helios Corner Project in West Berkeley.

Alicia has taken part in painting many murals in the Mission, including the Maestrapeace Mural on the Women’s Building, La Llorona’s Sacred Waters (at York and 24th Streets), and the murals on Cesar Chavez Elementary School.

The current installation is meant to honor human nature and the natural world.

“They portray the five elements: air, water, fire, earth and the soul, with images of elder men and women speaking to young men and women. The human images emerge from the earth motif,” Alicia wrote in an e-mail to Mission Loc@l.

The project’s goal is to create artwork at the grassroots level to promote environmental justice in underserved neighborhoods.

Alicia finished the murals in 2008 and they have been sitting in boxes at Satellite’s facilities since then. Satellite has limited funds for the project and still needs $5,000 to complete the installation of the panels on the building’s exterior walls.

There are only two more weeks to go on Alicia’s Kickstarter campaign. For more information, click here.
