This month’s map shows the Mission’s most common crimes in the month of September. For the sake of comparison, we’ve included all of the neighborhood’s single-room occupancy hotels (SROs), which are indicated by the orange squares. While a few of the crime hot spots are surrounded by SROs, social workers are reluctant to draw any conclusions.
“SROs get stigmatized,” said Jorge Portillo, program coordinator of the Mission SRO Collaborative. “What we forget is there’s a lot of people that depend on these places, and to label them as dangerous is wrong.”
Check out the map. Assault, robbery and car theft were at the top of the September crime list.
This is our first crime map with Geocommons, and we welcome your feedback. Let us know if you have suggestions for comparisons you would like to see.

Hey look, the folks at mission local managed to get the map the right way up this time!
I agree that SROs are necessary for lots of people. Having lived in between two when I lived in Soma, though, having them nearby is usually hazardous for one’s health.
I was just robbed at gunpoint on Landers Street between 15th and 16th street by two young assailants at 7.30 pm this past Friday October 28th. I don’t know if someone at Mission Local gathers this information or not or how you connect to the police database.. .but I would put this out as a notice.. that part of Landers is a little shady because it is narrow and not very occupied and there is a large blank wall from the back of Mission Delores residencies… I had been walking home on the street for the past year however..
Just want to let people know in the neighborhood.. So if there is another place to post this information that would be great.
Thanks!
Thanks for the new map style. This is a big improvement. And also for including the info on SRO’s.
I would also be interested in seeing where bars and restaurants are in relation to muggings. It might motivate business owners and residents alike to be more proactive in reporting suspicious persons and shooing away loiterers that may be waiting for a good target. Thanks again.
But Ryan’s not reluctant.
yeah i’d have to say the SRO story is the story here. thanks for the info, now i know where to take all my crack hos when i dont want em at my crib.
thanks missionlocal!
So how many SRO’s are actually in the Mission, and how does this compare to the rest of the City?
There are about 50 SROs in the Mission. Check this story out to learn more about SROs in the neighborhood: http://missionlocal.org/2010/01/families-grow-in-sros/
