I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.
As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.
As founder/executive editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

20 years ago the medical marijuana thing began in the santa cruz mountains and was raided by the feds. they had the cover of helping the sickest people. folks with aids and cancer and the rest. the whole thing exploited terminally ill people. they allowed these folks on the property if they gave up their social security checks. now that pot is legal the greedy bastards charge hundreds of dollars per ounce of weed. if you are terminally ill then your most likely living on ssi checks. so lets say you get $800 a month and your rest is $500 /mo and you also pay for power and telephone/internet is another $130/mo =$630 hat leaves you with that leaves you about $180 to live on. soo if an ounce is over $200 your screwed. and this crap they call compassion weed is a joke. it is not even usable weed. mostly stems and yellow leaf stuff. where is the compassion now? greedy assholes! i was born gifted in electronics and stuff so i never charge the poor or disadvantaged it is the right thing to do. maybe when people value how they feel and make others feel things may change but as far as we can tell you all exploit each other and even your own kids.
