The 27-year-old victim was walking near Woodward and 14th streets at 8:12 p.m. on Thursday when a young man approached him and tried to grab the cell phone out of his hand.
The two struggled until the suspect pulled out a handgun and demanded the phone, according to police.
At that point the victim gave up, handed over his phone and watched the suspect flee on foot.
Smartphones — especially iPhones — are increasingly sought after by thieves. Police advise handing them over.
