Jon Stewart’s October 30 Rally to Restore Sanity might be 2,800 miles away, but some locals want to bring its sound message to San Francisco.
A Facebook page with 1,247 “likes” and a rally website have sprung up since Stewart made his announcement last month.
Here is their pitch: “Too busy/broke to attend the Rally to Restore Sanity in Washington D.C.? Fret not, San Franciscan, for we are holding a satellite rally right here in San Francisco. Join us for San Francisco’s own rally for reasonableness on Saturday, October 30th. Together we can take it down a notch for America! “
Mission Loc@l sent an e-mail to the organizers and will update when we get their response.
The rally is scheduled for Civic Center plaza at 9 a.m., to coincide with the D.C. rally. Organizers are trying to raise $10,000 to rent a Jumbotron that would broadcast the D.C. rally and to pay for the permit and other costs, according to a message posted on their Facebook page.
Attendees can expect a Sarah Palin/Stephen Colbert look-alike contest. So far 186 people have pledged to attend.
Organizers have raised $2,530 in five days, as of Wednesday. The rally has no affiliation with Comedy Central, according to their Facebook page.
According to news website Politico, satellite rallies are scheduled in other cities, including: Seattle, Austin, Chicago and Los Angeles.
There is also a March to Keep Fear Alive — San Francisco scheduled for the same time and place.
