Angela Chan, a staff attorney for Asian Law Caucus, will likely be approved to the influential Police Commission at tomorrow’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

The Board’s rules committee, which includes progressive Supervisors Eric Mar, David Campos and Moderate Michela Alioto-Pier, recommended she be approved.

Chan is perhaps best known for being in the forefront in passing an amendment to the Sanctuary City policy. The amendment, which has been in legal limbo since last year, would require probation officers to report undocumented youth to immigration only if their felony conviction is upheld.

Chan, a Harvard Law School graduate, has received much praise from the immigrant community. However, some police and juvenile probation officials have also criticized her, mainly for her claim that some police officers have “overcharged” youth at the time of arrest, which could then lead to the deportation for a minor crime.

She comes into the post at a time when officials are saying that the Police Commission needs reform. Her role at the commission entails setting Police Department policy and conducting disciplinary hearings on charges of police misconduct.

She would be succeeding Vincent Pan.
