UPDATE: According to Sgt. Lyn Tomioka, the suspects arrested are brothers, and the crimes they confessed to occurred throughout the city. A couple of incidents took place in the Mission District. The laptops stolen were unattended in some cases, but not all.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, German Duran, 25, and Jesus Duran, 25, were arrested for a string of laptop thefts.
There were five separate incidents reported between March 31 and April 8. In most cases, police say the victim would be in a coffeeshop using his laptop when a man would walk in, grab the computer and run to a waiting getaway car.
Inspector Jaimerena of the SFPD Robbery Detail investigated the incidents and identified the two suspects involved. One of the suspects was arrested on Friday, April 24. He was driving the black Honda used as the getaway car. After serving two search warrants, police arrested the second suspect.
They confessed to the five laptop thefts as well as crimes that had not been reported. The suspects were charged with multiple counts of grand theft and burglary.
Police were unavailable for comment as to where these incidents occurred. Earlier this year, Mission Loc@l reported on another string of laptop thefts.
This Inspector did a great job of putting the pieces together – well done!
were these brothers? in fact twins? identical twins? although not germane to the main story, I believe flushing this fun fact out would be of some interest to the reader.
P.S.: Forgot to say good post!
Christopher – I agree. By the time the information went out – just before 5 p.m. on a Friday – I couldn’t reach anyone with the SFPD who could answer my questions. Your answer and more info coming on Monday…
