A 33-year-old man was found unresponsive in a San Francisco county jail cell this morning and later declared dead, the sheriff’s department has confirmed.
The man was discovered by deputies around 7 a.m. at the jail on Seventh Street, and medical staff was unable to resuscitate him.
His identity has not yet been confirmed by authorities. The cause or nature of the man’s death is also unclear.
A source told Mission Local that multiple deputies from the city’s largest jail facility in San Bruno were brought in to staff the jail today after the death occurred.
San Francisco’s jail population has steadily increased in recent years, and has reached its highest total since 2020 — more than 1,200 daily — under Mayor Daniel Lurie. There were 1,290 people in jail on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Office has struggled with understaffing, and dealt with violent incidents breaking out between inmates and staff.
The incident is being investigated by the Department of Police Accountability, the Medical Examiner’s Office, and the sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Unit, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office today.
This is a developing story and may be updated.
