Update: The deceased was named Robert Lewis, a 32-year-old resident of Oakland.
A man was shot and killed early this morning outside Timbuk2 at 20th and Shotwell, according to police and neighbors who saw part of the incident unfold.
At 4:05 a.m., the police report, a man of unknown age was shot and killed at 20th and Shotwell streets with a handgun and pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
The police did not give any other information about the incident, but neighbors who live nearby said the man was shot five times and that they saw a black car speeding away from the scene eastbound on 20th Street after it happened.
“We saw a black car going quickly,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “We heard ‘pat, pat, pat,’ like five shots.”
“We got down to the floor,” said Brandon Bernardino, another neighbor. “I called the cops and they came like five minutes later.”
Bernardino said he then went up to the third floor of his apartment building to see the scene, and saw a man right outside the Timbuk2, who had suffered gunshot wounds and being attended to by first responders.
“He was face up with blood spewing out,” Bernardino said. “I could see them trying to bring him back to life.”
Though he didn’t see the shooting, Bernardino thought the suspect likely shot from the eastern side of the intersection, because a bullet cracked the window of a Pilates studio across Shotwell Street, Studio 20.

Both neighbors were concerned that the shooting might be related to pimping on the block.
“We have neighborhood meetings because, here, there’s a lot of prostitution,” said the anonymous neighbor. The neighbor said he often sees groups of pimps “guarding the women” and fighting late at night.
“You hear them fighting all night long,” added Bernardino.
Neither said they knew the victim, however, nor had any specific information tying the shooting to pimps on the block. Bernardino pointed to past kidnappings on that block of Shotwell Street and said that though things had quieted down in the last five years or so, he was concerned about rising violence.
“I haven’t seen something like that in a minute,” Bernardino said. “It was getting better.”

Good that People get involved and speak up to make the neighborhood better, but the prostitution situation was worse before Supervisor Campos’ involvement.

Gregory, with respect, do you live on the block? I have, for 15 years. Campos has been beyond useless on this issue.
Thanks for the respect. Coming back with respect at you.
To frame, you lived 15 years on the Street, I’ve lived in the area twice as long. Your starting vantage point, 2001 was the temporal clean from when the Capp Street was front page news from the Doug Chin trial and 20/20 national television report.
Prostitution has challenged societies for centuries, its a tough issue. It used too be that in the Capp / Shotwell area prostitution was much more visible during daylight preciously. There was a long history of neighbors being frustrated with a series of politicians not doing enough. There even was Supervisor Leland Yee being stopped by police twice for soliciting prostitution in the area.
So my frame is, Campos fits in the tradition of many politicians who hasn’t done as much as neighbors want, but was in office in the time that things “improved.”
Obviously correlation does not imply causation, but more to the point, things haven’t improved on his watch. When I moved to the block from Lex/18th in 1999, the action was definitely more brazen; Amiano was useless as well. We petitioned SFPD to block the streets at night, and things calmed down for a bit, but there has been constant, organized criminal activity operating under the watch of city administration on our street for decades. It’s always been unacceptable, and lately things have gotten much, much worse. This is a clear failure on the part of Campos and his office, who are supposed to represent the residents of the neighborhood. The entire criminal organization is not only not from the neighborhood, they’re not even from the City of San Francisco.
Totally agree with you Andy and I hope WE as a community can let the next Supervisor know we WILL NOT tolerate prostituion and crime in our neighborhood anymore. Also as I wrote yesterday, Hillary Ronen continues to show that she is unfit to fill the seat that her boss currently holds. She’s part of the problem that is allowing these types events to continue nightly. She is Campos’ right hand and has no clue about the neighborhood. She can’t be his replacement, hopefully another candidate wins. Lastly, we need SFPD to fully engage in this area and be there overnight to make sure our streets are safe.
Andy is 100% correct.
This is absolutely related to your previous story about organized, criminal street prostitution in the Mission. Campos was made aware of the issue on day one of his term (I hand delivered 100 letters of concerns from neighbors). He has done zero to combat the problem. No one involved (pimps, prostitutes or johns) is from the neighborhood, or even SF (per SFPD). Oakland/Richmond are allowed to set up an organized criminal enterprise on our streets every.night.of.the.week. This is known and tolerated by Campos and his office. Shameful.
The pimps on mission are extremely dangerous.. A friend of mine unknowingly confronted a pimp after he witnessed him being aggressive towards a women. The pimp proceeded to flash him a handgun and could have easily shot him and gotten away with it.. The police need to do something about this
