Following Sunday’s officer involved shooting outside Mission Station, the San Francisco Police Department issued a statement Monday evening stating that the victim of the shooting wrote an apparent suicide note prior to the incident. Media sources have reported that the victim was 32-year-old Matthew Hoffman.
According to police spokesperson Officer Albie Esparza, during their investigation following the shooting officers found Hoffman’s phone with a letter entitled “Dear Officers.”
With the permission of the Hoffman’s father, police released the letter to the media. In in, the victim states that he wanted to end his own life and planned to intentionally provoke the officers. Police report he writes:
You did nothing wrong. You ended the life of a man who was too much of a coward to do it himself. I provoked you. I threatened your life as well as the lives of those around me. You were completely within your legal rights to do what you did.
There will be a community meeting in response to the shooting Tuesday, January 6 at 6 p.m., at the Corner Stone Church, 3459 17th Street.
