Weekend closures on Northbound I-280 starting Thursday night, according to Caltrans.

Drivers taking the scenic I-280 this weekend should expect longer delays in addition to the traffic expected for the upcoming Fourth of July weekend. Construction crews will be working on the highway from Thursday at 9 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m., causing weekend closures between Cesar Chavez Street and 24th Street near Potrero Hill.

According to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the closure is necessary to replace a bridge hinge in order to better withstand major earthquakes.  Northbound on-ramp closures include Alemany Boulevard, 18th Street, Indiana Street and 25th Street, and the U.S. 101 connector to northbound I-280. Northbound off-ramp closures include Cesar Chavez Street, Mariposa Street, 6th Street and King Street.

Northbound I-280 traffic will detour to U.S. 101. The Southbound I-280 entrance on Cesar Chavez, however, will remain open. As an alternative, drivers should use northbound US-101 or take public transportation.
