Two men in their 40s were found unconscious in the northbound lane of Valencia Street at 16th Street after being assaulted by five men of undetermined age early Tuesday morning.

Police said the men got into a verbal argument that turned into a physical fight. It’s not clear what caused the altercation, police said. The incident does not appear to have been gang-related, police spokesman Albie Esparza told Mission Local.

One of the victims is still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The other victim suffered only a bloody lip and nose.

There were no weapons involved in the incident when police arrived at the scene at 2 a.m. No arrests have been made.
