New York-based newspaper the Wall Street Journal stopped by our beloved neighborhood and did a story about plans for the New Mission Theater. As Mission Local readers know, these plans include a five-screen, 900-seat movie theater by Alamo Drafthouse and 95 market-rate housing units on an adjacent site that formerly housed the Giant Value store. From the Journal article:

“Tim League, founder and chief executive of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema of Austin, Texas, says he has agreed to terms in a deal to buy and restore the New Mission Theater from Mission District businessman Gus Murad, pending the receipt of city approvals for the at least $10 million project.”

It will be so nice to have a movie theatre back in The Mission. I spent many a weekend day at this theatre as a child watching first run movies.

Campos’ fight against gentrification seems to be going about as well as his fight against crime, except he claims to be focusing on the former.

It will not be like when we were kids. Just put the whites only signs back up. Don’t believe me or think I exaggerate? Check out Gracias Madre. Then reply. That stands for much and says it all. Not Cine Latino or Cine anyone who doesn’t work in tech but Cine Greedling

Which part of this plan are you opposed to? The movies? the housing? using the empty theatre?

Please read my comment again. I don’t oppose any part of this plan – I was making fun of Campos for his inability to do anything to address what he has said is the #1 problem facing the Mission, gentrification, and comparing that to his refusal to acknowledge that crime and quality of life issues are serious problems in the Mission.

I agree. Nothing is more important to preserve than a block full of empty, rotting theatres.

This will be a fantastic addition to the neighbhorhood. Too bad it takes 10 years to get anything done that will upgrade a blighted district.
