The recently released San Francisco firefighters’ union voter guide is causing some controversy over the picture it chose for the cover, of the scene on Duboce Avenue on Sunday, May 6, when a four-alarm fire scorched two buildings, leaving 6 people injured and 41 homeless.

On the front of the guide is a plea to vote no on Proposition A, which would force San Francisco to go through a competitive bidding process for its garbage contracts. Currently the company Recology is the city’s sole trash and recycling collector.

I heard people applaud the firefighters after they battled the fire, but is this voter guide exploiting a tragedy?

More information about Prop. A is available here and here.

  1. I couldn’t agree more with Amy. This is liken to blackmail. Vote our way or else. Does anyone have any idea how powerful the IAFF is? The money that is wasted to continue CITY SERVICES vs Privatization is in the millions! Wake up people.

  2. This is exploitive. Recology has a chokehold over SF’s politicians, who know their jobs depend on supporting Recology, and the latter knows how to lobby hard. Since when is a monopoly preferable to competitive bidding?!
