Speesees, a baby clothing and accessories business, closed its shop at 1415 Valencia St. on Saturday. The company is still “alive and kicking” online at speesees.com, said owner Rachel Pearson.

The San Francisco-based company opened the Valencia Street shop sometime in 2010 and has been in business in the city since 2003, according to its website. Pearson did not elaborate on why the store was closed.

Last year a similar business, Natural Resources, saved its storefront on Valencia Street thanks to $47,000 in donations from its loyal customers.

The market for baby products has declined in San Francisco, where birth rates have dropped since the late 1980s. In 2010 the city’s birth rate was 8,800, and the state estimates that the number will be 8,557 for 2011. By 2020, the state estimates that births will drop to 6,771.

The number of children under five years of age in the Mission District has dropped 17.9 percent in the last decade, from 3,042 in 2000 to 2,497 in 2010, according to the census.

In his spare time he can be found riding his bike around the city, going to Giants games and admiring the Stable building.
