An unmarked SFPD vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle collision on Potrero Avenue at 19th Street at 1:42 this morning, shutting down Potrero from 18th Street to 21st and sending all three officers in the vehicle to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The three male uniformed officers, responding to a report of a man with a knife at 24th and York, were traveling southbound on Potrero when their vehicle struck a light pole on the southeast side of the intersection at Potrero and 19th.

The officers were transported to the hospital, where one is in critical condition and a second in fair condition. The third officer is in good condition and was released from the hospital Thursday morning, according to Sergeant Michael Andraychak with SFPD Media Relations.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but Andraychak says the incident is being investigated by SFPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team and its Hit and Run Detail, which investigates collisions involving serious injuries. Sobriety is not considered a factor, but the driver will undergo chemical testing as per department policy.

Potrero from 18th through 21st was reopened just before 6 a.m.

We’re following this story closely and will update as we receive more information.

Christopher was first drawn to the Mission by Clarion Alley’s murals. Compared to his apolitical hometown, the strong political implications of the large murals and street art scene in San Francisco took him by surprise. Nonetheless, his favorite mural was of the T-rex terrorizing the Mission.
