Smoke and sirens filled the block of Mission Street between 18th and 19th at around 3:30 on Tuesday afternoon.

It stemmed from a kitchen fire that broke out in a unit in the building either above or behind Mission Chinese Food. The fire was quickly put out by the dozens of firefighters who arrived on scene.

The smoke could be sniffed blocks away, and some said they had to leave the area because it was so intense.

Nobody was hurt, except for maybe a cabinet or two, one firefighter joked. People were poking their heads out of second-floor apartments in the building on Mission Street.
