An 8.9 earthquake off the coast of Japan has triggered a tsunami that is expected to hit San Francisco at 8:08 a.m.

The earthquake caused severe damage in Japan, and the ensuing tsunami devastated farmland on the Pacific island.

The National Weather Service issued the tsunami warning for California at 12:52 a.m. Hawaii has issued evacuation notices for coastal areas. Authorities in California are actively working to assess the potential for damage from the tsunami.

The Coast Guard asks citizens to stay away from the coast, as it is deemed unsafe.
