The first-ever Mission Community Market takes place this Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Bartlett and 22nd Streets.

The organizers are billing it as more than a farmers market. Expect tons of fresh produce, crafts, entertainment and more, they say.

The market is partnering with community groups such as the Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA), the Merchant’s Association and 18 Reasons to involve local businesses. Entrepreneurs from La Cocina will sell their prepared foods at the events, which will also feature non-food crafts from local businesses working with the Mission Small Business Association (MiSBA).

The market is also partnering with after-school and recreational programs to create a space where children can learn about food, art and community.

Project manager Jeremy Shaw hopes that over the long term a community marketplace will help permanently improve Mission streets. He envisions a safer block emerging through community-based street design projects working with the Mission Streetscape Plan.
