SUMMARY:Brava Theater: SFBATCO and Brava presents: She Kills Monsters
DESCRIPTION:Join our Young Actors Lab teen students for a heartfelt and hilarious adventure into the world of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). When Agnes loses her little sister\, Tilly\, in a car crash\, her late sister’s old D&D journal becomes the key to reconnecting. \nDirected by Michelle Talgarow\, this coming-of-age tale follows one girl’s journey into her late sister’s imagination\, where she discovers courage\, friendship\, and her own inner hero. She Kills Monsters tackles themes of belonging\, grief\, and acceptance. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies\, nasty ogres\, and ’90s pop culture\, acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all. \nThis production is the Young Adventurers Edition\,specifically designed for High School theater groups. \nThe Young Actors Lab is a FREE pre-professional acting program for students of all experience levels. The Young Actors Lab is part of the Mission Academy of the Arts at the Brava Theater Center and programming is led by SFBATCO.

SUMMARY:ATA: Electronica: Ghosts in the Machine
DESCRIPTION:JOSH ELLINGSON: PEPPER’S GHOST/AGE13 + ASTROGOLEM +TELLURIAN DRAMA + \nFine-tuning through the ultra-rich ether\, we have discovered some\, uh\, “special” frequencies that ‘charm’\, and re-animate concepts of contemporary A/V installation/performance\, with jolts of juice both natural and ‘super’. Mission whiz Josh Ellingson marvels all with demos of his current works – thee eye-popping Pepper’s Ghost\, as well as his re-wiring of cult director Sid Davis’ Age 13. \nAnchoring the second half is a co-hit that threatens to crack through the ‘Quantum Consensus’: the US premiere of Riar Rizaldi’s Tellurian Drama\, a 20-min anomaly that asks way more that it answers\, on the uses and possible abuses of an obscure Malabar Radio Antenna\, on the island of Java in the Indonesian archipelago during the Dutch colonial period. Berlin skeptic Thorsten Fleisch contributes Astrogolem\, his digital hypothesis on a time-traveling Nikolai Tesla\, while Craig Baldwin shares his own revelations from his speculative history Spectres of the Spectrum (exc). \nPLUS Piercing the Unknown\, Hippies High on Alpha\, Clara Rockmore’s Theremin\, and other inquiries into novel pop-music forms flowing from those magickal waves of electricity! \n$13 DOORS @ 7:30 SHOW @ 8:00

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Where is Our Economy Now? With SF Controller Wagner & Chief Economist Egan
DESCRIPTION:Join Greg Wagner and Ted Egan in conversation about their roles shaping the future of the City’s economy and what is yet to come. \nSan Francisco’s economic recovery has been at the forefront of the national conversation around our City for years now. But who better to help us truly understand the recovery than the people measuring and shaping it directly? \nSF Controller Greg Wagner and Chief Economist Ted Egan will help us understand where our City sits now. Where are we in the budgetary cycle? How is AI shaping current economic trends? How does the good governance conversation\, like charter reform and commission streamlining\, come into play? And what are risks we’re seeing from the State and Federal levels? \n______________________________ \nGreg Wagner was sworn in for a 10-year term as the Controller for the City and County of San Francisco in February 2024. \nGreg began his career with the City in the Mayor’s Budget Office from 2006 to 2011\, serving as Mayor’s Budget Director under Mayors Gavin Newsom and Ed Lee. As the Mayor’s Budget Director\, Greg led the development and approval of the City’s annual balanced budget through the financially challenging years following the Great Recession. \nPrior to becoming Controller\, Greg served the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) as Chief Financial Officer where he managed a multibillion-dollar budget\, and then as Chief Operating Officer of SFDPH where he oversaw the finances and administrative operations of the City’s largest department\, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG)\, Laguna Honda Hospital\, and a citywide network of primary care\, mental health\, and substance use programs. As both Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of SFDPH\, Greg was crucial in the financial management of key public health and citywide priorities over the last decade\, including San Francisco’s emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was fundamental in managing the capital program to rebuild ZSFG and multiple outpatient service sites\, the implementation of Mental Health SF\, and the City’s implementation of the Affordable Care Act. \nNow\, as the City’s chief financial officer and auditor\, Controller Wagner\, with the support of his team\, is responsible for governance and conduct of key aspects of the City’s financial operations\, including processing payroll for all City employees\, managing the City’s bonds and debt portfolio\, and processing and monitoring the City’s budget. His office is also responsible for providing policy and economic analyses\, estimating the cost of ballot measures\, administering the City’s Whistleblower Program\, and directing performance and financial audits of City activities. \nGreg earned his Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California\, Berkeley. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and two children. \n______________________________ \nDr. Ted Egan is the Chief Economist of the City and County of San Francisco\, and directs the Office of Economic Analysis in the City Controller’s Office. The office prepares independent economic analysis of major City legislation. \nSince he joined in 2007\, his office has published over 100 economic impact reports on policy issues like the minimum wage\, affordable housing\, taxes and fees\, land use planning\, sporting events\, labor regulation\, and short-term rentals. During this time at the City\, he has served as an expert witness on the economics of same-sex marriage\, and won a Good Government award for his work redesigning the City’s business tax. He currently serves on the Data Users Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. \nBefore joining the City\, he spent ten years working for ICF International\, managing economic development strategy projects across North America\, Europe\, Latin America\, and the Middle East. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley\, and lectured in the Economics and City Planning departments at Berkeley for more than ten years.

Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”

SUMMARY:Shaping SF: Public Talk - San Francisco: A Liberal Oligarchy?
DESCRIPTION:New tech oligarchs have thrown their money around to shape city politics for the past decade. We now have a billionaire bluejeans heir for mayor. We explore how organized money and corporate power managed to steer San Francisco going back through the post-WWII cold war\, the long decline of Catholic morality\, and the explosion of social movements and the sexual revolution the city is known for. Join historian Lincoln Mitchell\, former supervisor and Mayoral candidate Tom Ammiano\, and neighborhood activist and writer Romalyn Schmaltz for a spirited romp through the tangled and conflicted histories of the past few decades.
