SUMMARY:Michelle Thomas Fine Art: A Place for Pichon by Steve Firestone (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: Friday\, April 17\, 5-7p\nOn view through June 26\, 2026 at Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio\nARTIST STATEMENT\nThe sculptures selected for this exhibition span a period of over thirty years. The ephemera of an industrialized world are materials I use consistently though not exclusively. They are reimagined and imbued with a new life once transformed. I invite the viewer to identify the architectural influences in my work. A colleague once described it as Bauhaus Romanticism; I like that phrase. Like a scavenger\, I continually collect “stuff” wherever it may appear\, rarely being inspired in the moment but trusting that the materials will reveal their potential in the future. When assessing this selection of work\, I have observed that some pieces reveal a personality while others reveal a sense of place.\nAlongside this group are some examples from my Pandemic Pantry series\, not surprisingly created during the Covid Pandemic. We were relatively homebound during that time\, a condition that encouraged introspection. There were many stories of people’s newfound interests in pickling\, canning\, fermenting and creating levains. With that in mind I looked around my studio with fresh eyes\, the shelves were packed with boxes of “ingredients” collected over the years. I was inspired to do my own version of “canning” utilizing these somewhat dormant materials. I wondered: what might it be like to walk into a strange pantry\, pick a jar off the shelf and try to make sense of what was inside? There was a learning curve to creating something inside a jar or bottle. New tools were needed for a new process and I came away with an appreciation for builders of ships in a bottle! — Steve Firestone\, March 2026

SUMMARY:Michelle Thomas Fine Art: Mother Vessel by Rebecca Edwards (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: Friday\, April 17\, 5-7p\nOn view through June 26\, 2026 at Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio \nPROGRAMS\nMother Vessel: Creating Sacred Space workshop\, April 22\, 6:30-8:30p\nCreating With Spray Inks class\, April 26\, 11a-1p\nSeeing Poetry workshop\, April 30\, 6-9p\nThe Art of Kirie: Japanese Paper-Cutting\, May 3\, 11a-1p\nPoetry Masterclass\, May 7\, 6-9p\nMother Vessel: Creative Portal\, May 16\, 10a-12p\nIntroduction to Gel Plate Printing and Other Mark-Making Techniques\, May 19\, 6-8p\nLEARN MORE + REGISTER https://michellethomasfineart.com/studio \nRebecca Edwards (born 1969) is an Australian poet and visual artist based in San Francisco. She has exhibited works on paper and found object sculpture in Japan\, New Zealand\, and Australia\, with work held in private collections across these countries as well as in the United Kingdom\, Canada\, and the United States. The University of Queensland’s Fryer Library houses a collection of her works on paper—including drawings\, paintings and papercuts—alongside manuscripts\, journals\, and other ephemera (Rebecca Edwards Papers UQFL434). Mother Vessel is Edwards’ first exhibition in the United States. \nA childhood spent in remote parts of the South Pacific—Papua New Guinea and Nauru—and various regions of Australia\, including the Northern Territory\, Queensland\, and New South Wales\, exposed Rebecca Edwards to many different modes of existence\, and many different ways of experiencing and creating art. The culture of the Abelam people of the East Sepik\, PNG\, was an early and profound influence. \nThis foundation deepened over time through engagement with Nauruan and Kiribati Islander beadwork and needlework\, African fetish sculptures\, Catholic icon and shrine imagery\, and Japanese papercutting (kirie). At sixteen\, she spent a year in Japan living with a family in Hiroshima Prefecture\, an experience that informed her enduring connection to the country. She later studied at the University of Queensland\, majoring in Japanese language and culture\, and won the Ford Medal for Poetry twice. Several grants from Arts Queensland\, Australia Council\, and Asialink have supported her return visits to Japan to write and exhibit. \n Rebecca Edwards is committed to a sustainable practice which includes repurposing materials destined for landfill\, even when that means climbing into a dumpster! She is captivated by the doll form\, particularly paper dolls\, 12th-scale miniatures\, and sacred icons and fetishes. An experienced educator\, she has taught drawing\, papercutting\, mosaic\, poetry\, prose writing\, collage\, and bookmaking to students of all ages\, and has performed her poetry at major literary events in Australia\, New Zealand\, and Singapore. \nHer latest collection of poetry\, Plague Animals (Puncher and Wattmann\, 2020) is available for purchase at the gallery.

Initiated through an open call\, this series creates a dedicated space at Gray Area in San Francisco for both emerging and established artists to convey urgent perspectives from the intersection of art and technology. \nsoft systems is the first exhibition presented by ./local_memory. \nIn soft systems\, the artworks on view are connected by their transformations of digital and material processes into ritual environments for reflection and care. Moving away from optimization and spectacle\, the exhibition centers memory\, embodiment\, and belief as foundational structures of the digital self. Across a range of concerns\, many of the artists included are driven by collective experience\, communal tradition\, interspecies relationships\, and slow culture. Together\, they mine rich potential from sources of friction\, slippage\, and stickiness. \nOn Sunday\, April 19\, Gray Area is thrilled to host our friends at TIAT for an exhibition takeover! Join us from 6 – 8 PM for special evening gallery hours and a guided walkthrough of the exhibit. All weekend\, TIAT members can visit the show for free. RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Public Works: Nicola Cruz with special guest Mesme presented by PW
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 17th\, 9:30pm – 2:30am \nFull Space / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nWant free entry? Check out the PW Union where members get event access\, drinks\, skip the line\, and more: www.publicsf.com/membership \nCurious about more ticket options\, deals\, and ways to party? Check out our website at www.publicsf.com \nPublic Works presents the genre bending master Nicola Cruz. \nLINEUP: \nNicola Cruz \nMESME \n+ more TBA \nNICOLA CRUZ BIO: \nNicola Cruz is an Ecuadorian electronic music producer and DJ known for blending Andean\, Latin American\, and Afro-Caribbean influences with contemporary electronic production. Born in France to Ecuadorian parents and raised in Quito\, his cross-cultural background plays a defining role in his sound. \nHe gained international recognition with his 2015 debut album Prender el Alma\, released on ZZK Records\, which fused traditional instrumentation and folkloric rhythms with deep\, atmospheric club textures. The record positioned him as a key figure in the emerging wave of forward-thinking Latin American electronic artists. \nCruz’s work often explores themes of identity\, ancestry\, and ritual\, combining field recordings\, organic percussion\, and analog synths into immersive compositions suited for both listening and dance floors. Over the years\, he has performed at major festivals and clubs worldwide\, building a reputation for hypnotic\, genre-blurring sets that bridge heritage and modernity. \nMESME BIO: \nDrawing inspiration from her favorite crime fiction and neo-noir films\, Mesmé’s entrance into the City of Angels from the Midwest via Singapore created a rapid buzz in the LA underground\, thanks to her vinyl-heavy sets\, striking selections\, and ability to build an intoxicating vibe from the ground up. \nDescribed by Boiler Room as one of Los Angeles’ hidden gems\, she is now one of the city’s most in-demand young DJs\, sought after by bookers from nearly every crew and corner of the LA scene\, from the city’s dimly-lit lounges to its various infamous downtown warehouse parties—and for good reason. Her insatiable passion and rich knowledge of music make for a trusted and savvy artist with a broad\, but distinctively moody range and “a sense of pacing that’s more honed than many headlining DJs.” (Resident Advisor) \nAs comfortable playing in a smoky lounge as she is in a sweaty warehouse\, her peak-time sets feature a heady yet potent blend of deep\, dusty atmospheres\, experimental textures\, raw bass lines\, and sultry vocals layered over thumping\, syncopated drums. \nMesmé’s signature sets and ability to capture the imagination of her audiences have made her a beloved\, and influential member of the LA circuit and beyond\, landing her multiple coveted affiliations\, including a residency at top LA warehouse party\, Into The Woods\, a monthly radio show (Mise-en-scène) on renowned independent radio station\, dublab\, plus personal invitations from Jamie xx\, DVS1\, and Ellen Allien to share the bill. She was awarded Resident Advisor’s Mix of the Day twice and has been highlighted as an emerging artist on the industry radar by DJ Mag and Beatportal. \nAside from her rising career as a DJ\, Mesmé is also a producer-to-watch. She made her production debut in 2020 with a sold-out five-track EP on Mall Grab’s label\, Steel City Dance Discs\, which was quickly followed by a Boiler Room appearance alongside Boyz Noise in 2021 and a spot on the Surefire Agency roster. 2022 saw her make a massive sold-out NYC debut in the main hall of Elsewhere alongside Mall Grab\, followed by a string of club and festival appearances across the country. \nMesmé has appeared with: \nBaltra\, Bambounou\, Ben UFO\, Boys Noize\, DJ Boring\, DJ Seinfeld\, Darand Land\, DVS1\, Etapp Kyle\, Ellen Allien\, FJAAK\, Four Tet\, Hodge\, Jamie XX\, Jensen Interceptor\, John Tejada\, Joy Orbison\, Kenny Larkin\, Kevin Saunderson\, Laurel Halo\, Lena Willikens\, Mall Grab\, Martyn\, Nastia\, Moderat\, Nite Fleit\, Objekt\, Santiago Salazar\, Silent Servant\, Tin Man and The Field.

You also get to meet our expert instructors’ very own backyard chickens! \nInstructors Jamie & Blas are natives of San Francisco. They tend a small homestead in San Francisco with their two girls\, complete with honey bees\, chickens\, greenhouse\, mini orchard and vegetables. Blas has a degree in environmental studies\, a certificate in sustainable design from the Urban Permaculture Institute of San Francisco and currently is teaching high school science in the Jefferson Union School District. Jamie has an MS in science and a doctorate in educational leadership from SF State University. She is a certified UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and currently Executive Director of Planet Bee Foundation. SUMMARY:Randall Museum: Paxton Gate at Bug Day!
DESCRIPTION:There are more insects on Earth than there are stars visible in the night sky. More beetles alone than there are species of vertebrates combined. And yet\, somehow\, most of us walk right past them. Bug Day is the one day a year when we stop\, crouch down\, and give these tiny powerhouses the celebration they deserve. Paxton Gate will be there\, offering a rare up-close look at the craft behind preserving insect specimens. \nWe’re heading to the Randall Museum for their annual Bug Day\, and we’re bringing one of our favorite things: in-person insect pinning demonstrations. If you’ve never watched a specimen be carefully mounted and preserved up close\, this is your chance. Our talented Entomology Instructor will walk visitors through the process from start to finish explaining not just the how\, but the why behind each step. We’ll have display specimens on hand\, custom species info sheets\, and beginner pinning kits and frames available for purchase for anyone who leaves wanting to try it at home. If the day sparks something deeper\, we’ll also have information on our hands-on entomology classes back we host throughout the year. \nAnd the rest of the day? Not bad either. \nBug Day is a free\, all-ages event packed with live critters\, hands-on activities\, and some of the Bay Area’s most passionate bug people gathered under one roof. Expect pollinator relay races\, bug costume awards\, arts and crafts in every classroom\, and live music from the Luke Schwartz Trio. Randall bug hats will be available for purchase\, because obviously. \nAlso presenting at Bug Day: SF Zoo · California Native Plant Society · SF Microscopical Society · Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society · Planet Bee Foundation · SF Beekeepers Association · SF Department of Public Health · Alameda County Vector Control · Don Buggito Edible Bugs · Tree Frog Treks · and more \nBug Day is hosted by the Randall Museum. Paxton Gate is a participating presenter. Free admission — no registration required to attend.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Monthly Chocolate Club at Manny's - Let's Explore Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Monthly discussions exploring and enjoying the wonders of chocolate! Bring curiosity and a chocolate to share! \nVenture with us into this endless and delicious topic. \nEach club session is a round table discussion in the Living Room\, at the back tables. \nWhat you bring to the conversation is curiosity and chocolate to share. Your contribution may be a bar or a confection\, a nostalgic favorite\, a sample of a rare cacao\, or even something you dislike and want to learn more about. Everyone please bring something to contribute to this beautiful community! \nHere are a few infrequently asked questions about chocolate: \n What actually is chocolate?\n Why does chocolate resonate so vividly with us in body\, mind\, and spirit?\n Cacao is called the “Food of the Gods” and is highly nutritious. What is science showing us about phytonutrients that benefit our health and well-being?\n How might we think about chocolate in contemporary culture and our shared human history? The oldest confirmed evidence of cacao use by our ancestors is approximately 5\,000 years ago. Our history and future with chocolate are worth discussing.\n We have a complex language for discussing wine—why not cacao and chocolate? \nWho is David? \nDavid has fifteen years of professional experience and a lifetime of enthusiasm for chocolate. As a chocolatier\, he makes delightful creations with amazing chocolate in micro-batches and offers them online and at farmers markets. His career in chocolate is rooted in pastry and chocolate production. Working with farmers\, researchers\, chocolate makers\, chefs\, and fellow chocolatiers\, he continually explores and enjoys the culture of chocolate. \nSpace is limited. Please reserve a seat at the table. \nMore information about David and chocolate can be found on his website: https://www.duchocolatier.com/

SUMMARY:Community Music Center: Respighi\, Italian Serenade\, Madrigals and More!
DESCRIPTION:Join Michael Long (CMC violin faculty) and friends for a casual afternoon of beautiful Italian and Italian-inspired chamber music for strings. The program will open with two duos. Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima’s “Heimat-Terra” is inspired by a text concerning the ozone hole but also civilizations\, cultures\, languages\, sounds\, etc. by the anthropologist Edgar Morin. However the piece follows a more abstract path. \nIn Martinu’s Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola\, the core elements come from Renaissance madrigals\, which had a freedom from conventional forms\, a variety of textures including equal-voices counterpoint\, and rhythm that was free from bar lines. Combining those elements with Eastern European / Bohemian-Moravian folk music themes and dances and the use of the pentatonic scales\, Martinů created a modern version of the madrigal. \nRespighi’s Quartet in D\, composed in 1904 and published in 1921\, is a lush\, Romantic work structured in four movements\, featuring a “Tema con variazioni” slow movement\, a light Intermezzo scherzo\, and a galloping tarantella finale. This early chamber piece reflects his melodic skill prior to his famous orchestral tone poems. \nMichael Long and Aaron Keller\, violins\nCharlie Longtine\, viola\nSung Choi\, cello \nSollima – Heimat-Terra for Violin and Cello\nMartinu – Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola\nRespighi – String Quartet in D \nFree (donations gratefully accepted)

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: ./local_memory: soft systems
DESCRIPTION:Friday: Opening Reception\, 6 PM to 10 PM\nSaturday: Open Gallery Hours\, 4 PM to 10 PM\nSunday: Open Gallery Hours\, 12 PM to 6 PM \n./local_memory: soft systems is a showcase of recently developed art and tech works by fifteen emerging Bay Area creators that explores how we perceive ourselves in a world inundated by digital systems. Over three nights\, this exhibition will include ambitious pieces ranging from immersive\, large-scale installations to intimate artifacts\, presented across both digital and physical media. \n./local_memory is a new\, artist-led event series dedicated to surfacing new voices from the Bay Area. RSVP here.
