DESCRIPTION:DIG! XX is the 20th anniversary extended edition of the rock documentary DIG!\, which adds new narration by The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Joel Gion\, features 40+ minutes of never-before-seen footage\, and brings this epic tale through to today. \nDIG! SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Vermiglio
DESCRIPTION:The lush and breathtaking beauty of the Alps\, filmed with painterly grace under natural light from frigid winter to redemptive spring\, provides the physical and emotional backdrop for Vermiglio\, Maura Delpero’s visionary film\, which won the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. This singular portrait of a sprawling family\, set in the small\, mountainous village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII\, follows a series of dramatic\, consequential events after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe De Domenico)\, who hides out in town after deserting the army. While there\, the soldier develops a romance with the family’s eldest daughter\, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). Vermiglio shows the lives of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time by the customs of a fading era. Conjuring stories from her own family’s past\, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human tale that recalls the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema\, but through Lucia’s perspective Vermiglio feels distinct and novel. Italy’s Official Selection for the 2025 Academy Awards. \nShortlisted for the Academy Award for Best International Feature

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Straight from the Haight
DESCRIPTION:With the emergence of Canyon Cinema\, that foundational film presenter and distributor\, in the early Sixties\, there was a visible upsurge of interest in experimental and artisanal filmmaking in the Bay Area. This\, in turn\, inspired the creation of a number of haphazardly-cobbled micro-cinemas\, some lasting but months\, but marked by a broadening embrace of handcrafted experimentation. \nThis program looks specifically at the Straight-Ashbury Viewing Society\, an adjunct of the short-lived Straight Theater on Haight Street\, assembling a group of seminal films that screened there in the fall of 1966. Accompanying this screening will be an informal discussion of other mid-Sixties venues\, such as the Cinematheque Coffeehouse\, Fether’s Point\, and the S.M. Eisenstein Memorial Cinema Institute. \nProgrammed and hosted by Steve Seid\, former curator of experimental media at the Pacific Film Archive. \nSTRAIGHT-ASHBURY VIEWING SOCIETY LINE-UP \nAll films screened between July and September\, 1966 \nBreathDeath (Stan VanDerBeek 1963\, 14.5 minutes\, B&W\, sound\, 16mm transferred to digital) \nBlue Moses (Stan Brakhage 1962\, 11 minutes\, B&W\, sound\, 16mm) \nDie (John Luther Schofill\, 1966\, 5 minutes\, color\, silent\, 16mm) \nMass for the Dakota Sioux (Bruce Baillie\, 1964\, 20 minutes\, B&W\, sound\, 16mm) \nUnsere Afrikareise (Peter Kubelka\, 1966\, 12.5 minutes\, color\, sound\, 16mm) \nTRT: 63 minutes \nDiscussion to follow

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Every Little Thing
DESCRIPTION:“Big-hearted… effortlessly riveting. Offers a vision of compassion as a way of life.” – The Hollywood Reporter \nAuthor and wildlife rehabber Terry Masear has an ambitious goal: to save every injured hummingbird in Los Angeles. But the path to survival is fraught with danger. This heart-expanding Sundance hit introduces audiences to Terry’s diminutive patients through breathtaking slow-motion photography and emotional story telling. Over the course of director Sally Aitken’s moving documentary\, we become deeply invested in humming birds like Cactus\, Raisin\, Jimmy\, and Wasabi\, celebrating their tiny victories and lamenting their tragedies. Through Terry’s eyes\, each bird becomes memorable\, mighty and heroic. Her compassion and empathy serves as a reminder that grace can be found in the smallest of acts and the tiniest of creatures.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: All We Imagine as Light
DESCRIPTION:The light\, the lives\, and the textures of contemporary\, working-class Mumbai are explored and celebrated by writer/director Payal Kapadia\, who won the Grand Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for her revelatory fiction feature debut. Centering on two roommates who also work together in a city hospital—head nurse Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and recent hire Anu (Divya Prabha)—plus their coworker\, cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam)\, Kapadia’s film alights on moments of connection and heartache\, hope and disappointment. Prabha\, her husband from an arranged marriage living in faraway Germany\, is courted by a doctor at her hospital; Anu carries on a romance with a Muslim man\, which she must keep a secret from her strict Hindu family; Parvaty finds herself dealing with a sudden eviction from her apartment. Kapadia captures the bustle of the metropolis and the open-air tranquility of a seaside village with equal radiance\, articulated by her superb actresses and by the camera with a lyrical naturalism that occasionally drifts into dreamlike incandescence. All We Imagine as Light is a soulful study of the transformative power of friendship and sisterhood\, in all its complexities and richness.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:New 4K Restoration!\nIn Celebration of Parajanov’s Centennial \nWidely considered the most important film in the history of Ukranian cinema\, Sergei Parajanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a masterwork that boldly combines folkloric pageantry\, fairy tale mysticism\, and frenetic\, hallucinatory cinematography. Adapted from Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky’s novel\, Shadows tells the story of Ivan (Ivan Mykolaichuk)\, a young Hutsul peasant who witnesses his father’s murder by the local miser. Years later\, Ivan falls in love with the miser’s daughter\, Marichka (Larisa Kadochnikova)\, but her shocking death leaves him wallowing in grief until he meets Palahna (Tatyana Bestayeva)\, a beautiful woman who seems to restore his faith in life and hope for the future. When the ghost of Marichka begins to haunt Ivan\, however\, Palahna is driven into the arms of the local sorcerer (Spartak Bagashvili)\, with tragic results. Shadows is steeped in the earthy atmosphere of the Carpathian mountains; filmed by Parajanov and cinematographer Yuri Ilyenko with an eye for constantly innovative camera movements and vivid color; and suffused by Hutsul culture in the form of composer Myroslav Skoryk’s collage-like score\, which brings together Ukrainian folk melodies with modernist\, experimental orchestration. It is one of cinema’s singular productions\, capturing the spiritual majesty of the past by creatively forging the medium’s future.
