SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Shrouds
DESCRIPTION:David Cronenberg in attendance for our preview screening on April 21! \nIn an eerie\, deceptively placid near-future\, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel) has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Diane Kruger) from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger)—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk\, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy. \nWritten following the death of the director’s wife\, the new film from David Cronenberg is both a profoundly personal reckoning with grief and a descent into noir-tinged dystopia\, set in an ominous world of self-driving cars\, data theft\, and A.I. personal assistants. Offering Cronenberg’s customary balance of malevolence and wit\, The Shrouds is a sly and thought-provoking consideration of the corporeal and the digital\, the mortal and the infinite. \nThe Shrouds opens April 25. Showtimes coming soon.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Love & Pop
DESCRIPTION:Newly Restored! \nJuly 1997. Tokyo schoolgirl Hiromi and her friends spend the summer going on dates with older men for money. Armed with only a cellphone\, Hiromi sets out to date her way to ¥128\,000 in order to purchase an expensive topaz ring before the mall closes for the day. \nBased on the novel by Ryū Murakami\, LOVE & POP is the live action feature debut from Hideaki Anno\, creator of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION\, one of the most celebrated anime series of all time. The film is radical in its stylistic approach to teenage ennui\, taking to the seedy streets of Shibuya with handheld digicams\, distorted lenses\, and a barrage of unconventional camera angles. Criminally underseen for years\, LOVE & POP remains a singular portrait of Japanese youth coming of age in the approach to the 21st century. \nContent Advisory: Contains a scene of sexual violence.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Teacher
DESCRIPTION:The destruction of a Palestinian home by Israeli edict and the murder of a youth at the hands of an Israeli settler set the stage for even more shocks to come in writer/director Farah Nabulsi’s assured feature debut. Saleh Bakri is Basem\, an amiable educator who tries to steer the deceased boy’s younger brother Adam (Muhammad Abed Elrahman) from seeking revenge. At the same time\, Basem ignores his own advice\, maintaining ties with the resistance and involving himself in a hostage situation. He tries to keep his activities secret from Adam and his British girlfriend Lisa (Imogen Poots) but it becomes harder to maintain his silence when Israeli troops show up at his door. Inspired by a real incident and set in 2014\, The Teacher is a shattering work that feels as current as today’s headlines\, and a drama made more devastating by Bakri’s soulful performance. SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: SFFILM: Mel Novikoff Award + Rashomon
DESCRIPTION:Mel Novikoff Award\nThe 2025 Mel Novikoff Award celebrates the Roxie Theater — Local gem\, cultural landmark\, and steadfast champion of independent cinema\, the Roxie Theater has been igniting San Francisco’s film scene for over a century. \nWaiting out pouring rain in the shelter of Kyoto’s Rashomon Gate\, a woodcutter and a priest relate the story of a samurai’s murder in Akira Kurosawa’s classic drama. But as they swap anecdotes\, it’s apparent that this is no straightforward chronicle. The woodcutter claims to have witnessed the crime and tells one version of events. But there are three other perspectives: that of the bandit charged with the killing\, that of the samurai’s bride\, and then there is the samurai’s ghost speaking through a medium. No two recollections lineup\, leaving a mystery intact at the heart of the tale. Rashomon’s influence looms large over succeeding generations of filmmakers\, the title itself entering the lexicon as shorthand that describes a certain type of film. Seventy-five years after winning Venice’s Golden Lion and jolting cinema\, the film’s ravishing black-and-white images and arresting storytelling remain as powerful as ever. \nJoin us in celebration of the Roxie Theater! Filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes will moderate a conversation about the Roxie’s past\, present\, and future\, with Executive Director Lex Sloan and Director of Programming Isabel Fondevila. A screening of Akira Kurosawa‘s multivalent Rashomon\, celebrating its 75th anniversary\, will follow.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: No Other Land
DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented by the\nJewish Film Institute! \nBasel Adra\, a young Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta\, has been fighting his community’s mass expulsion by the Israeli occupation since childhood. Basel documents the gradual erasure of Masafer Yatta\, as soldiers destroy the homes of families – the largest single act of forced transfer ever carried out in the occupied West Bank. He crosses paths with Yuval\, an Israeli journalist who joins his struggle\, and for over half a decade they fight against the expulsion while growing closer. Their complex bond is haunted by the extreme inequality between them: Basel\, living under a brutal military occupation\, and Yuval\, unrestricted and free. This film\, by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four young activists\, was co-created during the darkest\, most terrifying times in the region\, as an act of creative resistance to Apartheid and a search for a path towards equality and justice. \nWinner for the Academy Award for Documentary Feature Film!

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Encampments
DESCRIPTION:When a group of students at Columbia University in New York launch a movement protesting the war in Gaza\, they spark a nationwide uprising in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Encampments spring up at hundreds of other campuses as students object to their own university’s investment in the US and Israeli arms industry. Featuring detained student activist Mahmoud Khalil\, The Encampments takes viewers inside America’s student uprising with incredible intimacy and urgency. Professors\, whistleblowers\, and student activists shed light on a moment that captivated the nation’s attention and continues to make headlines today.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: SALLY!
DESCRIPTION:Q&A with filmmaker\, Deborah Craig\, Ondine Rarey\, and other guests. \nCo-presented by the GLBT Historical Society \n“Sally!” the feature documentary begins with Sally Gearhart at the height of her powers in the 1970s. She was one of second-wave feminism’s most beloved icons\, penned a cult classic fantasy novel about a female utopia and fought one of history’s greatest battles for queer rights shoulder-to-shoulder with Harvey Milk. But fast forward to 2008 and Sally has been largely forgotten by history—not to mention erased from the Hollywood film “Milk.” Yet rather than simply resurrecting her legacy and glorifying one woman’s story\, “Sally!” now takes a more collectivist turn. The film traces Sally’s life trajectory through the eyes of the exceptional women who fought for justice by her side\, revealing that Sally not only instigated the political movements that made her famous but was also deeply shaped by them. Finally\, when we revisit Sally in 2014\, she is living alone on Women’s Land\, without the community she helped create. What happened and what will become of her legacy? \nCourtesy of Women Make Movies

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Suzhou River
DESCRIPTION:Taking its name from the polluted river that flows through Shanghai\, director Lou’s hometown\, the brooding Suzhou River uses the singular first-person perspective of its unseen videographer-narrator to explore the grubby underbelly of the city\, observing the story of an unsuspecting motorcycle courier who finds himself snared in a kidnapping plot and murder rap. A seductive\, intricately structured stylistic coup from the Sixth Generation filmmaker\, drawing on influences from film noir to Vertigo (1958) while developing its own idiosyncratic and haunting visual vocabulary. \n“It’s hard not to be swept up by the strong current of Suzhou River: a seductive and atmospheric conundrum that works pleasingly as an exercise in storytelling.”– Sight and Sound \nCo-presented by Bay Area Chinese Culture Salon

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Blind Massage
DESCRIPTION:With Blind Massage\, Lou creates a true ensemble movie: the blind and partially sighted masseurs and masseuses of Sha Zonqi Massage Centre\, in Nanjing\, central China\, a distinctly unglamorous\, bottom-line undertaking run by the light-hearted Sha Fuming (Eric Qin Hao) and the more serious Zhang Zongqi (Wang Zhihua). It’s a powerful ride through a parallel world of metaphysical cinema that Lou first flirted with in Suzhou River (1999) and the big-budget Purple Butterfly (2003)\, but this time he also shows us a world of faces without eyes\, full fathom five into the fundamentals of cinema and the very fabric of perception\, a world where light and darkness lose their usual meaning but basic human emotions (love\, jealousy\, friendship) remain the same. Alongside its scenes of beauty felt or briefly glimpsed\, Blind Massage contains moments of humor\, joy\, and pure horror\, and Jóhann Jóhannsson’s music is always there to add color to Lou’s magnificent poetic canvas. \nCo-presented by Bay Area Chinese Culture Salon

Confronted with the challenges of the pandemic\, Xiaorui and his crew are forced to determine how to move forward in a rapidly changing world. \nFrom acclaimed director Lou Ye (Suzhou River\, Summer Palace)\, An Unfinished Film is “an utterly unique and very important movie about Covid\, the crisis that affected all of us\,” (The Guardian).

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Misericordia
DESCRIPTION:The teasingly entwined ambiguities of love and death continue to fascinate Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake)\, who returns with a sharp\, sinister\, yet slyly funny thriller. Set in an autumnal\, woodsy village in his native region of Occitanie\, his latest follows the meandering exploits of Jérémie (Félix Kysyl)\, an out-of-work baker who has drifted back to his hometown after the death of his beloved former boss\, a bakery owner. Staying long after the funeral\, the seemingly benign Jérémie begins to casually insinuate himself into his mentor’s family\, including his kind-hearted widow (Catherine Frot) and venomously angry son (Jean-Baptiste Durand)\, while making an increasingly surprising—and ultimately beneficial—friendship with an oddly cheerful local priest (Jacques Develay). In Guiraudie’s quietly carnal world\, violence and eroticism explode with little anticipation\, and criminal behavior can seem like a natural extension of physical desire. The French director is at the top of his game in Misericordia\, again upending all genre expectations.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Spring Fever
DESCRIPTION:“Loosely inspired by the risqué writings of early-20th-century maverick Yu Dafu… We are introduced to two men\, travel agent Jiang Cheng (Qin Hao) and bookish Wang Ping (Wu Wei)\, embroiled in a passionate love affair…Shot surreptitiously in the eastern city of Nanjing with available light\, SPRING FEVER is a deliriously erotic and anguished melodrama\, where frenetic street scenes alternate with murky interiors in a dreamlike weave of events and locations\, all bathed in cool dark tones. As always with the libidinal undercurrents of Lou’s films\, sexuality is the measure and reflection of individual freedom\, the lovers’ existential malaise representing social life under severe constraints.” – Damon Smith\, Filmmaker Magazine \nCo-presented by Bay Area Chinese Culture Salon

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Summer Palace
DESCRIPTION:Evoking the strident student activism in the days of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre\, Ye’s film follows small-town girl Hao Lei to the fictional “Beiqing University\,” where she finds romance with a fellow undergraduate\, is swept up in the ardent idealism of the moment\, and then\, in the years that follow\, settles into adult disillusion. Banned in Mainland China after its Cannes premiere for both its verboten politics and frank sexuality—it’s the first Mainland movie to feature full-frontal male and female nudity—Summer Palace is a raw\, restless work infused with both the vigor of youth and the bittersweetness of post-crackdown comedown. \nCo-presented by Bay Area Chinese Culture Salon
