In partnership with the newly launched Artful Intelligence Institute\, and to celebrate the release of Thinking Like a Human: The Power of Your Mind in the Age of AI\, join us for a thought-provoking panel discussion on strategies for empowering creativity in these challenging times. \nHow do we create\, in real time\, amidst the chaos of uncertainty? What might bolster our confidence to take creative risks? Why is it so important to still gather in physical artful spaces\, embodied human to embodied human? To answer these questions\, we will convene a panel of master improvisors\, thought leaders\, and creative professionals: \nHolly Bowling is an artist who defies convention and eludes labels. Acclaimed by Rolling Stone and having jammed with a long list of impressive company (Bob Weir\, Phil Lesh\, Branford Marsalis\, and many more)\, she is a virtuoso pianist with her own musical voice. \nStacy Horne is Director of Programming at Stern Grove Festival and Manny’s. She is a master community builder and experience creator in the live event space with a track record of conceptualizing and producing cultural events\, festivals\, and concerts. \nAndy Horwitz is a writer\, cultural programmer\, and creative producer in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. He is the founder of Culturebot.org\, one of the web’s most adventurous and respected arts and culture magazines. \nReed Mathis is a doorway to a hidden world of music. SUMMARY:Manny’s: Expanding the Toolbox for a Safe\, Equitable Climate Future
DESCRIPTION:Climate change endangers life on our planet — and even under the most ambitious mitigation timelines\, we face devastating consequences to humans and ecosystems around the globe. Low-lying nations could face catastrophic flooding\, equatorial regions may suffer lethal heat stress\, vulnerable communities could see crop and water systems collapse\, and the poorest people in the world could bear the brunt. \nIn that “climate overshoot” world\, what does responsible\, equitable climate stewardship look like? It must include decarbonization at a faster pace. But it also means urgently assessing all the tools that might help reduce the worst risks — especially tools that could protect the poorest and most vulnerable\, who will always be least able to adapt. \nCould sunlight reflection be a tool to help avoid the worst impacts of global warming? \nThere’s vigorous debate on this topic — but the space is also rife with misinformation\, hyperbole\, and conspiracy theories.\nJoin us for a focused conversation about what we know\, what we don’t know\, and the current research to understand potential sunlight reflection methods. \nSpeakers \nMorgan Goodwin\, Executive Director of the Planetary Sunshade Foundation and former director of the Sierra Club’s Angeles Chapter \nDakota Gruener\, Executive Director of Reflective and resident at Astera Institute \nKelly Erhart\, Outlier Projects \nReflective is a philanthropically-funded organization focused on equipping the world with the data and tools needed to make informed decisions about sunlight reflection\, fast enough to matter. \nThe Planetary Sunshade Foundation is funded through the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency to advance the world’s understanding of space based reflecting methods.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: KALW presents: Difficult Conversations - AI and the Workplace

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Urban Alchemy - Innovations for 50-years of outdated social service models
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco and cities across the country are grappling with overlapping crises: fentanyl is claiming lives with no cure in sight\, housing shortages are driving visible suffering on our streets\, and people with behavioral health emergencies aren’t receiving proper care. \nFounded in San Francisco in 2018\, Urban Alchemy is challenging decades of outdated social service models by employing and training people who have lived experience with incarceration\, addiction\, and\, homelessness to provide trauma-informed care and services in the communities hardest hit by addiction\, homelessness\, and poverty. \nIn this conversation\, Urban Alchemy CEO Dr. Lena Miller will share how the organization is creating cleaner\, safer\, and more compassionate communities here in San Francisco and in communities nationwide by innovating new models for the social services sector. \nModerated by former S.F. chronicle reporter Kevin Fagan

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Chronicle Live: Where does Bay Area theater go from here?
DESCRIPTION:Shrinking seasons. Pauses in production. Hibernations. Closures. \nSan Francisco Chronicle headlines about Bay Area theater in recent years haven’t exactly painted a rosy picture. Some observers wonder if we’re spiraling into an industry-specific doom loop: Will all the bad news mean fewer artists move here\, leading to less art still? \nOf course\, there have also been recent bright spots\, rising stars and new ideas that attest to the bottomless ingenuity and resourcefulness of the region’s artists. Still\, if a full rebound to pre-pandemic days is unlikely\, can we make sense of how we got here and use that to envision a different future for the art form in the Bay Area? \nJoin Chronicle Theater Critic Lily Janiak live at Manny’s alongside Tony Award-winning playwright Jonathan Spector\, Ted Russell of Californians for the Arts and San Francisco Playhouse Producing Director Susi Damilano for an in-depth conversation about the state of local theater and where the industry goes from here. They’ll explain how nonprofit theater works; whether it’s faring worse in the Bay Area than elsewhere in the country and what\, in spite of all this\, is giving them hope. \nThey’ll also answer your questions and share what local theater fans can do right now to help support companies and artists.

Are long-held climate and safety goals taking a back seat? We want to hear what you think. \nJoin The Frisc for this FREE community listening session during San Francisco’s Good Neighbor Week. Bring your facts\, opinions\, and respectful dialogue. The Frisc’s streets and transit reporter Kristi Coale and editor Alex Lash will answer questions and moderate the conversation. \nBut you will have the floor — not to mention a light lunch for those who get there early enough! \nLight bites as supplies last and the Cafe is open to bring in lunch!

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Across the Table Part 1: Discussing Israel and Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join Maz Jadallah and Steve Scheier for this important discussion. \nMaz Jadallah is a Palestinian American entrepreneur and long time resident of the Bay Area. His parents are Palestinian refugees from the 1948 Nakba\, or “catastrophe”\, that saw the mass displacement and dispossession of 750\,000 Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. \nSteve Scheier is a Jewish Amercan author\, leadership cultivator and speaker. \nWhat We’re Doing \nWe are two relatively new friends—one Palestinian American\, one Jewish American—who met through mutual circles and found ourselves drawn into deep\, ongoing conversations about Israel/Palestine. Despite the emotional weight and complexity of the topic\, we discovered that by grounding our dialogue in trust\, curiosity\, and shared humanity\, we could engage meaningfully across difference. In this first session\, we’ll sit down for a 1:1 public conversation—not a debate—to model what it looks like to ask hard questions\, explore inherited narratives\, and listen with empathy\, even when we don’t agree. \nWhy We’re Doing It \nIn the U.S.\, conversations about Israel/Palestine are often shut down\, avoided\, or reduced to slogans. They can be especially fraught between Jewish and Palestinian communities\, where pain\, fear\, and political assumptions run deep.We believe there is a deep hunger for honest\, empathetic\, and courageous dialogue—not to score points\, but to build understanding. Our aim is to create a space where people can witness how trust can form across divides\, and where difficult truths can be spoken without destroying connection. \nThere will not be a live audience Q&A. Instead\, we invite attendees to submit questions via this form. These questions will help shape future dialogues and allow us to address sensitive issues thoughtfully and thoroughly. \nThis is the first of a 3 Part Series over the next few months exploring this subject. \nProceeds from this event to support World Central Kitchen

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Understanding Addiction Night 4 - The Power of Radical Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:This event is last in a 4 part Series on “Understanding Addiction and Recovery” at Manny’s \nGLIDE staff regularly reverse overdoses and GLIDE has also tragically lost clients and community members to overdose. And GLIDE has the solution: a radically inclusive approach to health access pioneered by the Reverend Cecil Williams and influenced by the historic work of the AIDS activists in the 80’s. \nThe key to this approach is honoring and including all community members: people who use drugs\, advocates\, care workers\, and concerned citizens. These different groups have different needs\, and everyone’s needs matter. Whether someone is passionate about harm reduction or passionate about abstinence\, GLIDE behaves inclusively towards them because we understand that perspective comes from their unique journey. \nOn this panel\, Dr. Gina Fromer will welcome and honor the perspectives of two community leaders\, Richard Beal and Lydia Bransten\, who have advocated for differing strategies towards substance use. The panelists will discuss how their approaches are all part of a continuum of care. \nAbout the Panelists \nRichard Beal is the Director of Recovery Services at the Tenderloin Housing Clinic\, and has been working in the San Francisco community since 1996\, beginning at St. Anthony’s Foundation and the Ozanam Detox Center. \nLydia Bransten is the Executive Director of the Gubbio Project\, which provides unhoused people with sanctuary services at St. John’s the Evangelist Church in the Mission\, and helps them connect with housed parishioners and church visitors. \nDr. Gina Fromer joined the Glide Foundation as President and CEO in late 2023.

This cycle\, Clayton and her team are focused on helping elect Governor Roy Cooper to the U.S. Senate\, protecting Justice Anita Earls’ seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court\, and expanding Democratic representation in the legislature. Clayton has built an energized staff dedicated to organizing on the ground\, recruiting strong candidates\, and holding Republicans accountable\, all with a vision of building lasting Democratic power in one of the nation’s most competitive battlegrounds. \nBIO \nAnderson Clayton serves as the current chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party. SUMMARY:Manny’s: Living Room Sets - Songwriter Night II
DESCRIPTION:Living Room Sets are intimate electro-acoustic performances held in the cozy back room at Manny’s.\n– Looking for local music\, but also like to be in bed by 10 PM watching Jason Momoa’s new show on Apple TV+\, or similar activities?\n– On the hunt for the sleekest new songwriters in town\, with an aux perc entourage\, sipping double espresso at 8 PM?\nThis is the place! It’s music in the round; a boxing match of sorts. I play some songs\, you play some songs. Don’t overthink it\, just show up. \nAbout The Hosts: \nOONA GARTHWAITE…\nGrew up on a dirt road in rural Northern California\, writing songs as a way to make sense of the world\, then moved to Los Angeles at 17 to attend UCLA on a mix of scholarships and student loans. After graduating\, Oona paid her bills working in documentary film and public access TV while she continued to write and produce her own music.\nShe spent her 20s performing up and down the West Coast\, building a reputation as a standout songwriter and performer — and navigating the often predatory churn of the commercial entertainment business. Along the way\, she experienced what she would later realize was textbook sexual and intimate partner violence.\nOona sought treatment for PTSD in 2021\, and came out of it with newfound strength\, self-compassion — and a desire to tell the stories she needed to hear as a younger person. She began writing and producing her own films later that year. She is currently producing a record\, co-writing with other musicians\, and building new pathways to support Bay Area creative leaders of underrepresented genders. \nCOLE BETTLES…\nIs kind of obsessed with San Francisco; obsessed with the history\, what’s hip-and-in\, what’s out-and-never-to-be-back-on-the-rebound\, the political landscape\, avocados\, what jazz tunes are being played on the circuit\, zoning maps\, produce markets\, new coffee shops\, Chinatown\, burritos\, wanna-be techy techs\, bringing the high-speed rail into North Beach; the whole deal kind of fascinates him dearly. So much so that he’s willing to go crazy over the whole matter\, and often does\, but don’t fear\, he also tries to keep it clean and organized through hard work\, commitment\, etc.\, etc. He reads the fine print\, and meditates over things (jacuzzi at least twice a week at the country club… doesn’t even feel the need for a cold plunge). He doesn’t do social media (except radio interviews) and divulges government secrets for bitcoin and is bullish about the future of sports gambling. It’s all confusing\, but come find out some more at his live show where he plays songs…

SUMMARY:Manny’s: The Lines We Draw: The Journalist\, the Jew and an Argument about Identity
DESCRIPTION:What’s it like to be a Jewish journalist broadcasting about the Middle East right now? And how should a Jew and a journalist think about the two parts of their identity? In fact – should they even try to separate them? \nTim Franks is one of the hosts of the BBC’s Newshour — which is broadcast to a global audience of millions\, and is also on KALW at midday. He’s also a former Middle East correspondent for the BBC\, based in Jerusalem. And that posting is the starting point for his new book\, The Lines We Draw: The Journalist\, the Jew and an Argument about Identity\, published in the US on September 2nd. He tries to confront some of the most sensitized — and ever-present — questions: What do we expect from our Jews? What do Jews expect of themselves? What are the lenses we bring to seeing the world? What are we likely to be getting wrong\, right now? He does so by uncovering an extraordinarily colorful – and previously hidden — family history\, spanning centuries and continents\, and through tales from his own reporting around the world – from wars to going undercover with neo-Nazis\, from the Superbowl to a Festival of Lettuce. \nAt this event\, Tim will be reading from his book\, selling and signing copies of it\, AND answering questions. \nBIO – Tim Franks has presented Newshour\, the flagship news and current affairs programme on the BBC World Service\, since 2013. Before that\, Tim spent almost 20 years as a reporter. He cut his teeth covering the Troubles in Northern Ireland before heading to Westminster and becoming the Today programme’s special political correspondent. \nTim spent nine years as a foreign correspondent\, based in Washington\, Brussels and Jerusalem\, and travelling across Europe and the Middle East. He’s covered several major conflicts\, from Iraq and Israel-Lebanon\, to South Sudan and Ukraine. Tim won one of the most prestigious international war-reporting awards – the Bayeux – for his coverage of war in Gaza. He also spent two years as the BBC’s most improbable sports correspondent. \nAlthough he’s now based in London\, with Newshour\, Tim does still regularly report from the field\, and has co-presented the programme from locations as diverse as Managua\, Beijing\, Addis Ababa\, Caracas\, Damascus\, Berlin and Bujumbura and Damascus.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Understanding Addiction Night 2 - the Overdose Epidemic and Recovery Debate
DESCRIPTION:This event is night 2 of our four part Series on “Understanding Addiction and Recovery” \nIn late 1990s San Francisco\, more than 100 people died of heroin overdoses a year. In the fentanyl era\, those numbers seem quaint. At least 600 people have died of overdose every year since 2020\, with a high of 810 in 2023. \nThe unrelenting tragic pace — 358 more in the first half of 2025 — has spurred debate about harm reduction\, a complex set of policies and tools that grew out of the AIDS crisis and became official city policy in 2000. It includes Narcan\, medication-assisted treatment\, and supportive housing that permits the use of drugs and alcohol. Some policy makers\, health providers\, and advocates are examining what’s working and what isn’t. How can San Francisco get beyond its typical polarization to help people with addiction and recovery? \nJoin us for a discussion with two people on the front lines. Del Seymour knows the Tenderloin\, ground zero of SF’s overdose epidemic\, better than anyone. He was an addict and dealer in the neighborhood for 18 years. He now runs Code Tenderloin and leads walking tours there\, and serves on a local homelessness oversight board. Keith Humphreys is a Stanford University professor who studies addiction science and public policy. He was a policy advisor in the Bush and Obama administrations. \nHumphreys and Seymour will be in conversation\, moderated by The Frisc editor Alex Lash. \nDel Seymour\, Photo Credit – Pamela Gentile

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Memoir of a Reluctant Giant
DESCRIPTION:“Memoir of a Reluctant Giant” is the story of David (they/them) who struggles to find themselves in a world of rigid binaries. David invites readers to reconsider their perception of gender and sex. They are literally a giant\, standing a towering 6′ 10” tall. They are also a giant figuratively\, as an activist at the center of the struggle for gay and transgender rights\, and their fight to stop unnecessary medical interventions on intersex infants. It’s also a poignant tale of love\, loss and the courage to live authentically. \nDavi Barker (the Ghostwriter) will give an introduction about how he created this memoir\, and why these kinds of stories are so important right now. Davi is a writer\, artist\, and explorer of identity\, autonomy\, and the forces that shape both. David Strachan (the Giant) will read 4 passages from this Memoir. He has written several articles about his experience having Klinefelter’s syndrome and has appeared in several documentaries at the Frameline Film Festival. He has been an intersex and non-binary activist for decades. \nBooks will be sold and a percentage of sales ($35\, cash preferred) at this event will go to interACTadvocates.org. It can also be purchased online from Barnes & Noble.

Just three months after the Valkyries took the court\, the team that owner Joe Lacob and co. paid $50 million to establish is valued at $500 million — the most in the WNBA. \nHow have the Valkyries captured San Francisco’s attention and catapulted themselves to record attendance and valuation in their first season? And as WNBA viewership explodes\, how are play\, refereeing\, fan culture and player compensation evolving too? \nJoin the Chronicle live at Manny’s on Wednesday\, August 27 at 6 p.m. for an evening about how the Valkyries have taken flight. SUMMARY:Manny’s: Reel San Francisco Stories - A History of Film In SF
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered whether a movie you are watching was filmed in San Francisco or the Bay Area? More than 600 movies\, from blockbuster features to lesser-known indies\, have been entirely or partially set in the region since 1927\, when talkies made their debut. \nHistorian Christopher Pollock will tell stories behind the films and about the sites used. He’ll also highlights actors\, directors and technical staff who originated from the Bay Area or have come to call it home. \nUsing a broad cross-section of film genres speaker Pollock will explore the role of film as an unintended but fortunate benefit to the preservation community. He will talk about how some on-location movies have become a record of places that have been lost due to well-meaning redevelopment\, neglect\, demolition\, fire\, or have otherwise disappeared.
