SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: TouchDesigner 101: Creating Interactive Installations and Generative Art
DESCRIPTION:Over the last several years\, TouchDesigner has risen to prominence as a leading software tool used to create immersive experiences\, interactive installations\, performance tools for lighting/live shows\, and generative visuals. \nThis intensive course focuses on an interactive installation and generative art perspective\, and will cover methods of visual experimentation and project building for installations. Over the course of 12 weeks participants will learn TouchDesigner from the ground up\, starting with foundational skills including the basics of the interface\, node-based programming techniques\, and best practices for development and organization. Once the foundations have been covered\, participants will take a deeper dive into textures\, 3D geometry (including procedural techniques and particles)\, rendering\, UI building\, utilizing Python within the software\, and more. \nThe workshop is a great way for new users of TouchDesigner to build a foundational knowledge of the software and to start experimenting with the same techniques that are used by experienced developers and artists alike. \nOver the course of the program\, students will learn the technical skills and gain the creative inspiration to create an interactive artwork in a final public showcase attended by the creative community\, industry\, and museum professionals.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Gretchen Andrew: Facetune Portraits (Opening Night)
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of SF Art Week 2025\, Gray Area is pleased to announce an exhibition of newly commissioned oil paintings by Gretchen Andrew.\nOpening Night: January 23\, 4 – 8PM \nFacetune Portraits contemplates the near-ubiquitous contemporary practice of digital\, AI-enabled body modification. Weaving conceptual and practical threads from traditions in both generative art and traditional portraiture\, Gretchen Andrew creates oil paintings that examine changing perceptions of beauty in the algorithmic age. \nAlgorithmic filters—readily available on social media platforms and video communication tools—promise a more ‘appealing’ version of ourselves. Gretchen challenges this ideal by employing custom-built robotics to physically apply ‘beautifying’ algorithms on to wet oil paintings. \nFor her portraits at Gray Area\, Gretchen conducted sittings with prominent Bay Area figures. After painting each subject’s likeness by hand\, Gretchen uses her custom robotics to transform the image—applying a machinic stroke to paint algorithmic ‘beautifying’ changes to the subject’s appearance. The resulting Facetune Portraits render visible the dissonance between our natural state and the technologically-perfected image\, coexisting uncomfortably on the canvas. \nEach unique\, one-of-one painting is available for sale. Please direct all inquiries to wade@grayarea.org

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Andrew McLuhan teaches Understanding Media Intensive: Part two
DESCRIPTION:Join a group of like-minded people from around the world for the newest cohort of Understanding Media Intensive: Part Two\, the second of a three-part intensive survey of Marshall McLuhan‘s major 1964 work Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man\, taught by Andrew McLuhan\, Director of The McLuhan Institute. Over 13 weeks we will cover chapters 8-20 – part one covered background and chapters 1–8. UMI: Part Three (spring or fall 2025) will cover the concluding chapters 21–33. \nIf you’re interested in how technology shapes us individually and socially\, if you’re interested in the pioneering work of Marshall McLuhan\, if you’ve tried to read Understanding Media but had a hard time with it\, if you’d like to immerse yourself in a deep study of this 1964 guidebook and explore how to use it to make sense of the contemporary world\, this course is for you. Course participants join in from around the world in a small group from a variety of backgrounds from students to teachers\, artists to CEO’s\, people in technology\, marketing\, from all walks of life come together to explore and make sense. \nIn an age where our media environment conditions and structures our reality in increasingly potent ways\, Understanding Media provides important foundational knowledge on how our cultural traumas and tropes are embodied in technologies. This course will provide lecture and discussion on Part Two of the book\, which puts forth a set of tools for exploring human technologies and innovations as a means to regain agency in the midst of our increasingly disorienting online lives. \nInstructor Andrew McLuhan reads each chapter aloud\, with personal anecdotes and other sources (books\, essays\, letters\, documents) to add context and comprehension. Discussion and optional creative assignments provide another valuable resource to help students absorb the material and apply it today. Live students are able to engage in discussion and ask questions while an Audit option is available at a lower cost for those unable to attend synchronously. \nLectures will include explorations and explanations of never-before-seen author annotations\, historical documents\, and personal accounts. This course picks up at the beginning of Part Two of Understanding Media starting with Chapter 8 – The Spoken Word: Flower of Evil? and will conclude with Chapter 19 – Wheel\, Bicycle\, and Airplane. A scrapbook of materials around the publication of the book in 1964 compiled by Marshall’s wife Corinne McLuhan\, containing reviews and interviews\, will add further context to how the book was received and provide insight into the material under discussion. \nClasses average 2-3 hours and will be streamed live on Tuesdays from January 7\, 2025 – April 1\, 2025\, starting at 5:00pm PST / 8:00pm EDT\, and ending no later than 8:00pm PST / 11:00pm EDT.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: DENTAXUVIA by Antigoni Tsagkaropoulou & Huntrezz Janos
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 10 for a live mixed reality performance experience that fractures the boundary between the virtual and the physical. \nThrough a cyber-feminist tale of dreams\, post-apocalyptic cities\, and queer love\, DENTAXUVIA follows the supernatural journey of a duo and their avatars into the quantum and vast depths of the infinite potential of the future. \nThe performance fuses the unique artistic visions of Huntrezz Janos and Antigoni Tsagkaropoulou\, utilizing technology\, sculpture\, and poetry to conjure a fragmented futuristic scene of cyberpunk insurgents. \nIn this sci-fi explosion of visuals\, the tangible meets the intangible as Huntrezz and Antigoni perform in wearable sculptures and as avatars in their virtual world. The result is an act of queer resistance that sheds their old skins and identities\, empowering them to reclaim agency in the face of oppression and igniting belief that anyone can do the same. \nThis performance is organized as an off-site activation for Janos and Tsagkaroupoulou’s solo exhibition DENTAXUVIA – Chapter 1: Corporeal Conversations—on view November 16\, 2024 – January 18\, 2025 at Telematic Media Arts in San Francisco’s SoMa District—in which the artists have transformed their theatrical performance into an interactive installation. \nThe development of DENTAXUVIA was supported by TRANSFER\, a fiscally-sponsored research & development project of Gray Area\, and Onassis ONX.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: ML Buch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive journey into the sonic world of Danish composer and producer ML Buch as she performs music from Suntub.\nSuntub is the second full length album from ML Buch\, a double record of 15 pieces by the Danish composer and producer\, entering further into the realm of electric guitars and layered vocals along with exploring new instrumental expressions.\nSince 2021\, ML Buch has released windows into Suntub in the form of Fleshless hand (2021) and Somewhere / High speed calm air tonight (2022). Suntub unfolds this world in full with its tall skies\, river mouths and singing tracks. With an offset in open tunings on a 7-string Stratocaster\, slide and fretless tablet guitars and deep-sampled virtual guitars\, the album draws up narratives and locations in a distant time. Props like puddles\, well buckets\, bone barrels and flesh rags live in these scenes\, suspended in air\, drifting about\, climbing stairs and ladders\, all given life through guitar sensibilities and visceral vocals.\nLike ML Buch’s overall practice\, Suntub is both utterly precise and intuitively fluid. Vocal and instrumental pieces counterbalance\, giving the album its own unique pace. Some motives are disjointed\, others flaring\, oddly familiar and highly personal. It holds distractions and temperament with the same intensity\, perhaps a relic of the artist’s deep engagement with the record\, which was initiated five years ago and has since then been written\, recorded\, produced and mixed by ML Buch herself.\nGet tickets: https://grayarea.org/event/ml-buch/

SUMMARY:Gray Area: Breadboarding Modular Synthesizers
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, you will learn how to design basic electronic oscillators with integrated circuits and discrete components. These principals will allow us to synthesize musical sounds from the ground up and arrange them into melodic and rhythmic patterns. \nOver the course of two days\, we will focus on two circuit typologies: square wave oscillators for synthesizing pitched instruments and sine wave oscillators for emulating percussive sounds. After learning how to build these circuits out on breadboards\, we’ll explore two ways of interacting with our circuits – one a button-based system for actuating sounds\, and another an automated circuit for sequencing them. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have built your own unique\, playable instrument capable of generating synth melodies and sequencing drum patterns in real-time. \nNo previous experience is necessary and all materials are provided for you in this workshop.\nCourse Logistics \nDates: Saturday November 23 & Sunday November 24\, 2024 \nTimes: 1-4PM PT \nLocation: Gray Area / Grand Theater\n2665 Mission St\, San Francisco\, CA 94110 \nCost: $250 \nScholarship: We also offer Diversity Scholarships.\nApply by November 9\, 2024. \nExperience Level: Beginner \nRequirements:\n• No additional tools required \nAdditional Information:\n• No refunds or exchanges\n• View our FAQ here\n• Contact info@grayarea.org with any questions\nWorkshop Outline \nDay 1 \n Build out a basic square wave oscillator + amplifier\n Build out a basic twin-T sine wave oscillator\n Troubleshooting and Q&A with an explanation of both circuits \nDay 2 \n Using buttons and switches as an interface\n Build out sequencer with binary counter + multiplexer\n Circuit variations and discussion of further possibilities

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: StoryScroll: Share your Life Story with AI Tools
DESCRIPTION:Sharing personal stories is a powerful way to express your perspective\, celebrate differences\, and uncover shared values. Across cultures\, gathering around a table for a meal often creates a warm\, trusting environment for storytelling. Inspired by the many dinners shared in lead artist Cheng Xu’s kitchen\, we’ve developed a virtual dinner host designed to encourage the exchange of life stories. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll be guided by StoryScroll (formerly Dragon Delusion)\, a custom AI tool that helps you visually tell your story. Acting as a virtual dinner host\, StoryScroll will guide you step by step to discover your story\, add details\, and bring it to life through visuals. We will also take a behind-the-scenes look at the popular AI tools that contributed to StoryScroll‘s creation. \nWhether you’re seeking self-discovery\, healing\, or simply a meaningful exchange\, this introspective journey offers something for everyone. \nThis workshop is offered through the BAVC Media VERSED program. VERSED is a series of hybrid workshops\, hands-on labs\, virtual and in-person trainings for media makers to skill up\, spark and sustain careers in the media arts on a free or below-market basis. This program is made possible by a generous donation from the National Endowment for the Arts.\nDates: Tuesday November 19 & Thursday November 21\, 2024\nTimes: 6:30PM – 8:00PM PT\nEnroll today: https://grayarea.org/course/storyscroll-share-your-life-story-with-ai-tools/

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Simulation Sessions - November
DESCRIPTION:A monthly mini-lecture and hack night for artists\, game designers\, character designers\, architects\, world builders\, and AI agent designers working in (or interested in exploring) 3D simulation.\nSimulation Sessions is a free monthly event series facilitated by the World Engines Lab\, incubated at Gray Area. In response to the growing prevalence and sophistication of virtual simulations and environments\, these sessions seek to sustain a local community of 3D designers\, artists\, and technologists\, facilitate peer teaching and learning\, and spark dialogue about the social\, cultural\, and political dimensions of building digital worlds. All\, regardless of skill or experience level\, are welcome to attend and bring their current projects (in any 3D platform\, including Unreal\, Unity\, Godot\, Three.js\, Babylon.js\, Rhino\, Blender\, Houdini\, Spline\, Womp\, TouchDesigner\, Custom 3DAI tools\, and more). Each session begins promptly at 6pm with a brief talk or mini-workshop led by a member of the community. At 6:30pm\, participants are invited to work on projects\, seek technical advice\, mingle\, and meet others engaged in the practice of building simulations. Feel free to arrive at any time between 6:00 and 9:00pm.\nFREE RSVP: https://grayarea.org/event/simulation-sessions-november/

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: An Evening of Films by La Pocha Nostra
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of experimental films by artist collective La Pocha Nostra opened with a short introduction by Guillermo Gómez-Peña.\nOver the course of the pandemic\, interdisciplinary performance collective La Pocha Nostra got to work developing a collaborative filmmaking format\, drawing directly from our own performance methodology and responding to the immediate artistic constraints posed by the multiple pandemias and prevailing culture of fear. The process of making our performance films is de-centered\, experimental\, and collaborative\, defying traditional filmmaking practice – moviemaking against all odds and by any means necessary.\nThis special screening features a selection of experimental films completed during the past 4 years.\nGet tickets: https://grayarea.org/event/old-school-video-art-against-nostalgia-films-guillermo-gomez-pena-gustavo-vazquez/

SUMMARY:Gray Area: Cybernetic Countercultures Intensive
DESCRIPTION:What if there were a road less taken in the history of cybernetics — one with profound implications for how we understand technology today? \nAlongside the well-known cybernetics of command and control\, of informatics and machine intelligence\, in the 1960s and 1970s a more organic cybernetic mode also arose\, an ecological line of inquiry that foregrounded the complex internal and interactive behaviors of living systems. \nA 12-week online course led by Dr. Bruno Clarke and Dr. David McConville of Gaian Systems\, and co-produced by Gray Area\, the Cybernetic Countercultures Intensive will take this alternative ecological route through the larger history of cybernetics. Our aim is to recover and revive the organic and ecological lines of systems thinking and then to venture toward new ways of conceiving and building advanced technological systems — from machines that work in symbiosis with living processes to adaptive architectures and regenerative infrastructures. Join us on a voyage of rediscovery seeking not to imitate life but to integrate the technosphere with the biosphere\, to design a technological paradigm grounded in the sensitivity and sentience of the living world.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: The Memory Theaters of Claudia Hart
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area is pleased to present ‘The Memory Theaters of Claudia Hart\,’ performed with Tommy Martinez. Join us at 6PM for Happy Hour\, followed by a seated performance at 7PM as well as a reception afterwards. \nIn the Memory Theaters\, Claudia Hart recites personal fables that hybrid Grimm’s fairy tales with ghost stories and Gothic fiction\, to create a haunting narrative about a digital artist trying to find her way in the alienating culture of high-end technologies. Hers is a world obsessed with the cult of innovation\, invested in eternal newness but otherwise an extension of a larger artworld where power\, money\, status\, and adherence to a narrow insider code of ethics and behavior dominate. Estranged from the futuristic and success-driven world in which she finds herself\, the Memory Theaters track Hart’s transformation of life into art\, reflecting on generational trauma and her own psychological dissonance as she navigates the harsh political realities of the contemporary art world. Hart tells her stories against a backdrop of her projected 3D animations\, while Martinez plays electric guitar. His dark and haunting music is rehearsed but improvised upon and processed live\, setting the pace and mood of this powerfully emotional theatrical narrative. \nThe Memory Theater of Claudia Hart (2023-2024)\, transforms the contents of her archives into a new work. In the tradition of the Wooster Group\, Hart’s Memory Theater takes the form of a 40-minute theatrical monologue combined with animations that include experimental avatar dance\, 3D animation and video recordings of live performances\, initially produced for The Alices Virtual-Reality Ballet\, a collaboration between Claudia Hart and Edmund Campion that took place over the course of seven years between 2013 and 2020. One of the many iterations of this work was a live Virtual Reality version\, produced in 2018 by Tommy Martinez\, in a Tech Residency at Pioneer Works\, Brooklyn\, NY. This summer\, Hart and Martinez have returned to this earlier piece in order to rework it in relation to the public politics of 2024. \n‘The Memory Theaters of Claudia Hart’ is based on The Alices Virtual-Reality Ballet\, a collaboration by Claudia Hart and Edmund Campion\, taking place over the course of seven years\, between 2013 and 2020. \nWritten by Claudia Hart\, 2022-2023 and rewritten in collaboration with Tommy Martinez in 2024. \nLive Music Composed and Performed by Tommy Martinez. \nRemixing\, sound\, and software produced by Edmund Campion\, 2014-2024. \nEvent Production by Andrew Blanton.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Introduction to Shaders and Practical Applications – Gray Area Festival 2024 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you will learn how to code shaders by creating a visual composition with GPU code and a little bit of math. This is an ideal way to create music visualizers\, or any interactive abstract graphics of the sort. We will briefly go over how to use the shaders we create in a variety of other real-time engines like Unity\, p5.js & touch designer. You will learn about where the shader exists in the graphics pipeline\, the basics of how the language works\, and how to quickly iterate on writing your shader using livecoding tools (code that compiles on the fly). You will also be given a plethora of tools to build upon what you learn\, so you can keep learning and practicing beyond this workshop. \nThis workshop is part of the Gray Area Festival 2024. \nMarking Gray Area Festival’s 10th anniversary\, Gray Area 10 continues our annual survey of culture through the lens of creative practice\, featuring a conference\, performances\, and workshops.
