SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: An Evening of Films by La Pocha Nostra
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of experimental films by artist collective La Pocha Nostra opened with a short introduction by Guillermo Gómez-Peña.\nOver the course of the pandemic\, interdisciplinary performance collective La Pocha Nostra got to work developing a collaborative filmmaking format\, drawing directly from our own performance methodology and responding to the immediate artistic constraints posed by the multiple pandemias and prevailing culture of fear. The process of making our performance films is de-centered\, experimental\, and collaborative\, defying traditional filmmaking practice – moviemaking against all odds and by any means necessary.\nThis special screening features a selection of experimental films completed during the past 4 years.\nGet tickets: https://grayarea.org/event/old-school-video-art-against-nostalgia-films-guillermo-gomez-pena-gustavo-vazquez/

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting performance of 13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips\, the newest record by experimental rock band Xiu Xiu.\nWith 13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips\, Xiu Xiu strove to create a record that felt unafraid\, pushing boundaries not only for the audience but the band itself. Mixed by John Congleton\, the nine-track album explores themes of existential despair\, disorientation\, and the struggle for significance. Despite its intense subject matter\, this record genuinely cares for its audience and is imbued with purpose. Ultimately\, it transcends the randomness of life and connects with its listeners on a profound\, authentic level.\nGet tickets: https://grayarea.org/event/xiu-xiu-13-frank-beltrame-italian-stiletto-with-bison-horn-grips/

SUMMARY:Gray Area: Cybernetic Countercultures Intensive
DESCRIPTION:What if there were a road less taken in the history of cybernetics — one with profound implications for how we understand technology today? \nAlongside the well-known cybernetics of command and control\, of informatics and machine intelligence\, in the 1960s and 1970s a more organic cybernetic mode also arose\, an ecological line of inquiry that foregrounded the complex internal and interactive behaviors of living systems. \nA 12-week online course led by Dr. Bruno Clarke and Dr. David McConville of Gaian Systems\, and co-produced by Gray Area\, the Cybernetic Countercultures Intensive will take this alternative ecological route through the larger history of cybernetics. Our aim is to recover and revive the organic and ecological lines of systems thinking and then to venture toward new ways of conceiving and building advanced technological systems — from machines that work in symbiosis with living processes to adaptive architectures and regenerative infrastructures. Join us on a voyage of rediscovery seeking not to imitate life but to integrate the technosphere with the biosphere\, to design a technological paradigm grounded in the sensitivity and sentience of the living world.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: The Memory Theaters of Claudia Hart
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area is pleased to present ‘The Memory Theaters of Claudia Hart\,’ performed with Tommy Martinez. Join us at 6PM for Happy Hour\, followed by a seated performance at 7PM as well as a reception afterwards. \nIn the Memory Theaters\, Claudia Hart recites personal fables that hybrid Grimm’s fairy tales with ghost stories and Gothic fiction\, to create a haunting narrative about a digital artist trying to find her way in the alienating culture of high-end technologies. Hers is a world obsessed with the cult of innovation\, invested in eternal newness but otherwise an extension of a larger artworld where power\, money\, status\, and adherence to a narrow insider code of ethics and behavior dominate. Estranged from the futuristic and success-driven world in which she finds herself\, the Memory Theaters track Hart’s transformation of life into art\, reflecting on generational trauma and her own psychological dissonance as she navigates the harsh political realities of the contemporary art world. Hart tells her stories against a backdrop of her projected 3D animations\, while Martinez plays electric guitar. His dark and haunting music is rehearsed but improvised upon and processed live\, setting the pace and mood of this powerfully emotional theatrical narrative. \nThe Memory Theater of Claudia Hart (2023-2024)\, transforms the contents of her archives into a new work. In the tradition of the Wooster Group\, Hart’s Memory Theater takes the form of a 40-minute theatrical monologue combined with animations that include experimental avatar dance\, 3D animation and video recordings of live performances\, initially produced for The Alices Virtual-Reality Ballet\, a collaboration between Claudia Hart and Edmund Campion that took place over the course of seven years between 2013 and 2020. One of the many iterations of this work was a live Virtual Reality version\, produced in 2018 by Tommy Martinez\, in a Tech Residency at Pioneer Works\, Brooklyn\, NY. This summer\, Hart and Martinez have returned to this earlier piece in order to rework it in relation to the public politics of 2024. \n‘The Memory Theaters of Claudia Hart’ is based on The Alices Virtual-Reality Ballet\, a collaboration by Claudia Hart and Edmund Campion\, taking place over the course of seven years\, between 2013 and 2020. \nWritten by Claudia Hart\, 2022-2023 and rewritten in collaboration with Tommy Martinez in 2024. \nLive Music Composed and Performed by Tommy Martinez. \nRemixing\, sound\, and software produced by Edmund Campion\, 2014-2024. \nEvent Production by Andrew Blanton.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Introduction to Shaders and Practical Applications – Gray Area Festival 2024 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you will learn how to code shaders by creating a visual composition with GPU code and a little bit of math. This is an ideal way to create music visualizers\, or any interactive abstract graphics of the sort. We will briefly go over how to use the shaders we create in a variety of other real-time engines like Unity\, p5.js & touch designer. You will learn about where the shader exists in the graphics pipeline\, the basics of how the language works\, and how to quickly iterate on writing your shader using livecoding tools (code that compiles on the fly). You will also be given a plethora of tools to build upon what you learn\, so you can keep learning and practicing beyond this workshop. \nThis workshop is part of the Gray Area Festival 2024. \nMarking Gray Area Festival’s 10th anniversary\, Gray Area 10 continues our annual survey of culture through the lens of creative practice\, featuring a conference\, performances\, and workshops.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Cinema Image: A Small Array of Computer Film Techniques – Gray Area Festival Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The relationship between artists writing code and experimental film and video is a long and rich history. In this workshop for beginners and intermediate coders\, I’ll share a few code examples written in Processing that process 2D images to create time-based visual experiences. We’ll have time to explore these examples and to make things together. \nWe’ll start the workshop by looking a relevant historical examples including “flicker films” and collage films from artists including Man Ray\, Tony Conrad\, Paul Sharits\, and Stan Brakhage. The Expanded Cinema book by Gene Youngblood featured by Gray Area in 2020 is our guide. We’ll look at some examples from my own work over the last twenty years\, then we’ll walk through code examples that take images apart and use the image data to create videos that abstract the original images. These small code examples have been developed in my studio over the years to assist with making my work. \nThis workshop is part of the Gray Area Festival 2024. \nMarking Gray Area Festival’s 10th anniversary\, Gray Area 10 continues our annual survey of culture through the lens of creative practice\, featuring a conference\, performances\, and workshops.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: The Layered Universe – Gray Area Festival Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce participants to DevOps as a diasporic tool for mysticism. Through considering the web as both an ethereal and tangible realm\, participants will select a 3D object of personal history or significance to deploy at any data center located in major global cities. Similar to the Filipino practice of creating anting-antings\, these selected objects will serve as conduits for prosperity and protection in another realm. \nThis workshop is part of the Gray Area Festival 2024. \nMarking Gray Area Festival’s 10th anniversary\, Gray Area 10 continues our annual survey of culture through the lens of creative practice\, featuring a conference\, performances\, and workshops.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Critical Image Synthesis: Glitching the AI Imaginary – Gray Area Festival Workshop
DESCRIPTION:An AI art workshop for AI critics. From Ben Laposky to Nam June Paik\, artists who work with technology often work against it. The generative AI boom has led to a glut of kitschy and glossy reproductions from the style library of the datasets. They’ve been criticized for how their data is collected and for the biases these datasets contain. But generative computer art has a longer history\, set apart from the history of photography and illustration favored by tools such as Midjourney and Dall-E. This history of computer art bends toward the creative misuse of systems to challenge their constraint on our techno-social and artistic imaginations. How can digital artists subvert the logic of these systems\, and work toward a new visual vocabulary for AI? \nAs a founder of the Algorithmic Resistance Research Group (ARRG!) artist\, writer\, and researcher Eryk Salvaggio (cyberneticforests.com) explores generative AI as an adversary\, rather than a collaborator. In this workshop\, Salvaggio will explore conceptual and technical strategies for interrogating generative AI systems for images\, video\, and music. Attendees will leave with new ways of looking at how these models work\, and have time to develop\, test\, and share their strategies.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Saliva Bar — Gray Area Festival 2024 Opening Night Performance
DESCRIPTION:Consumers have been trained to regularly swab\, spit\, and give up ownership of their bodily substances to corporations and government run centers. These fluids hold the data of our DNA\, personal information\, and identity. Can an individual human become your saliva deposit center instead? Can we take saliva exchange back into our own hands? \nIn this opening performance\, you are invited to exchange a sample of your saliva with one of Lauren Lee McCarthy’s own. A Terms Of Exchange outlines the artist’s intention to protect the privacy of your identity and biodata. Participants are free to do as they like with McCarthy’s own saliva. The growing collection of saliva collected by the artist through these performances is an archive of a moment when the boundaries of our bodies and DNA is shifting.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Simulation Sessions with Alexa Ann Bonomo
DESCRIPTION:A monthly mini-lecture and hack night for artists\, game designers\, character designers\, architects\, world builders\, and AI agent designers working in (or interested in exploring) 3D simulation. \nMonday\, August 26\, 2024 \n6PM – 9PM \nOpen to all\, regardless of experience / skill level. \nEach session begins with a lightning talk or workshop and is followed by hacking\, hanging\, and peer-to-peer skill-sharing. \nFree RSVP \nBring your computer and current works-in-progress. \nSeated program \nView our FAQ page for more info\, or contact us at info@grayarea.org with any accommodation requests.\nAbout Simulation Sessions \nSimulation Sessions is a free monthly event series facilitated by the World Engines Lab\, incubated at Gray Area. In response to the growing prevalence and sophistication of virtual simulations and environments\, these sessions seek to sustain a local community of 3D designers\, artists\, and technologists\, facilitate peer teaching and learning\, and spark dialogue about the social\, cultural\, and political dimensions of building digital worlds. \nAll\, regardless of skill or experience level\, are welcome to attend and bring their current projects (in any 3D platform\, including Unreal\, Unity\, Godot\, Three.js\, Babylon.js\, Rhino\, Blender\, Houdini\, Spline\, Womp\, TouchDesigner\, Custom 3DAI tools\, and more). \nEach session begins promptly at 6pm with a brief talk or mini-workshop led by a member of the community. At 6:30pm\, participants are invited to work on projects\, seek technical advice\, mingle\, and meet others engaged in the practice of building simulations. Feel free to arrive at any time between 6:00 and 9:00pm. \nThis Month’s Speaker\nAlexa Ann Bonomo\nAlexa Ann Bonomo is a tech artist and scholar with a deep interest in methods in preservation and archiving with an extensive skillset in creative technology. Her creative work primarily lives on the internet and other ephemeral settings in the form of net art\, creative writing and other community driven projects. Her art practice is experimental across mediums of creative coding and traditional handmade craft\, primarily new methods in printmaking and fiber arts. She is currently exasperating in existential thought about how she could “revive the Arts & Crafts movement\, but for the internet” and rapidly prototypes small artifacts in the form of websites or large scale installations. Alexa attempts to bestow light upon the unknown of vulnerable data that is emitted from one’s self. Allegorical imagery invokes serenity\, safety and charitable love for flora and fauna. She intermixes the use of born-digital art and handmade craft by handcoding websites (pure html/css/js)\, handmade print materials(cyanotype\, block printing\, fiber arts) and casting light(projection mapping). Alexa has taught various alternative and university level courses in digital design and creative coding. SUMMARY:Gray Area: Communal Computing Workshop: Neighborhood Internets
DESCRIPTION:We live in the age of the “personal computer” these days. Even as the internet connects billions around the world every day\, we still feel alone on the web. Our devices and interfaces were designed for individual experiences rather than collective ones. Communal Computing explores the shape of a world of “communal computers\,” filled with software made for people to create together and love each other and made by people who care about maintaining it for the long-term. How can technology bring us together and give us space to support one another and create together? How can we build it in a way that lets the human behind the design shine through the bits and circuits? \nIn this one day workshop\, we’ll explore alternative device interfaces and internet environments that foster intimacy\, co-creation\, and solidarity. The workshop is hands-on and experiential: each participant is expected to walk away with a functional “communal computing” interface. \nhttps://tickets.grayarea.org/events/f9058c5e-4fec-ea47-a717-adb5901120f8 \nNeighborhood Internets \nWhat if we could enable sharing our presence on any website at any time? \nEven though the web is teeming with thousands of people at any given moment\, we often feel alone—just our cursor in the big world wide web. Even if we’ve stumbled upon the same places or crossed paths before\, there’s no sense of who else has been there and what kind of person they are. So much of what we do is hidden from each other. \nplayhtml is an open-source library Spencer Chang made to create web interactions that are shared in real-time and saved over time. From re-creating beloved existing interactions like shared cursors and message walls to imagining new ways of sharing digital space like internet furniture and digital fingerprints\, playhtml imagines a world with a plurality of tiny internets and social networks that enable people to connect in more expressive and emergent ways than the text-centric platforms we have now\, towards an internet that feels more like a shared city that anyone can shape. \nTaking inspiration from everyday physical spaces we convene in (neighborhood cafes\, transit stops\, stoops\, dog park) and emergent interactions in products (cursor parking lot\, figma high-fives\, party in a google doc)\, we’ll enchant existing websites with real-time interactivity and create new tiny spaces that explore new ways of relating to one another and sharing space together on the web.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Raising McLuhan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation and discussion about the Raising McLuhan project\, a media tech labour of love designed by media makers\, archivists\, technologists and philosophers with the aim to ‘raise’ Marshall McLuhan (as from the dead\, from a child\, from obscurity) and parent (rather than train) an AI model on McLuhan’s «body» of work and the legacy his archives hold. \nCome hear from the project team about their visions and entry points for this planned multi-year project. It begins in 2024 and 1964 when Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man was first published. The project will intimately grow to include many multimedia experiences that will deepen our understandings of how the medium is the message—then\, now\, and tomorrow.

SUMMARY:Gray Area: Chia Amisola - My computer never asks me how many computers I had before
DESCRIPTION:“Let’s turn our computers into flowers\, rains\, suns…”\nJoin us at Gray Area on July 26th for a special evening of ambient performances\, led by Gray Area Incubator Artist Chia Amisola. Headlining with their poetic ambient work\, My computer never asks me how many computers I had before\, Amisola will be joined by invited artists exploring the boundaries of sound\, HTML\, and live A/V performance.\nAmisola’s internet ambient performances splay hundreds of windows across the screen\, inhabiting the internet as they read the text on a website\, its metadata\, desktop icons\, the terminal\, and then their own browser history. Accompanied by live ambient and samples drawn from fields to abandoned blogs\, their performances live between a poetry reading\, desktop performance\, and durational ambient performance. Intimate as it is inhabited and embodied\, they click\, scroll\, stutter\, lag\, click\, and refresh\, bringing us to realize the internet is a place we make\, and can fill.\nChia Amisola (b. 2000\, Manila) is an internet & ambient artist and designer devoted to the internet’s loss\, love\, labor\, and liberation. Their (web)site-specific practice (websites\, tools\, performance) posits creation as synonymous with liberation. Activated as ‘internet ambient’\, dense / durational / networked desktop readings where hypertext is performance\, they touch on the defaults\, opacities\, and infrastructural intimacies of the internet as an ecology\, territory\, and atmosphere.\nWith practice dating back to 2006\, including writing & software (such as gamemaking tools as games)\, digital intimacy (whenwe.love)\, placemaking & territories (their manifesto\, thesoundof.love\, on domain naming)\, religion & ritual (Visita)\, folk archival (Philippine Internet Archive)\, teaching & organizing (including pro-bono organizing 100+ events across 7+ years of programming with Developh)\, artifacts & performances (the performance of the browser\, the browser as performance)\, amongst others.\nThey are the organizer of Developh\, a critical technology institute based in the Philippines they founded in 2016\, and the Philippine Internet Archive. Most recently\, they’ve curated & programmed working on KAKAKOMPYUTER MO YAN!\, an exhibition of Filipino networking cultures. They graduated with a BA in Computing & the Arts with distinction from Yale University in 2022\, receiving the Sudler Prize for the creative arts. They currently are a NEW INC Art & Code member\, were a Fellow of the Processing Foundation\, resident at Gray Area (US)\, Yale Center for Collaborative Arts & Media\, and the Internet Archive’s DWeb Camp. They have spoken internationally at the Grace Hopper Celebration (US)\, Causal Islands\, UX+ (Philippines)\, Naive Yearly (Denmark) have been internationally exhibited at /rosa (Germany) and Now Play This (UK)\, performed at CultureHub (NYC)\, panke.gallery (Germany)\, and 98B (Philippines)\, recently published in Runway Journal (AUS)\,Runway Journal (AUS)\, The HTML Review\, and Rappler and have been featured in El País\, Frieze\, and The New Yorker.\nGet Tickets: https://grayarea.org/…/chia-amisola-my-computer-never…/

SUMMARY:Gray Area: Internet Ambient Workshop with Chia Amisola
DESCRIPTION:The internet is an ecology\, and our websites contain its flowers\, clouds\, stones\, & tides. This workshop-performance is an introduction to the sound of a poetic and ambient web: shaping ecosystems with computers\, website-making as world-making\, interdependent internet publishing\, and embedding field recording and deep listening practices to the online.\nThis is a workshop on sound\, websites\, networking\, and performance. Resisting the silent and subtle nature of the internet through poetic acts of website making and alternative means of ‘reading’ websites\, we’ll draw from histories of hypertext\, networking\, and desktop performance to shape a joint internet ecology\, performing a web anew together.\nEnrollment in this workshop gives you free access to Chia Amisola’s performance of My computer never asks me how many computers I had before later that day!\nEnroll today: https://grayarea.org/event/internet-ambient-workshop-with-chia-amisola/
